Appreciating Duran Duran Part 1

I am well-aware that Duran Duran Appreciation Day isn’t for a couple of days.  It isn’t until August 10th.  Yet, I have so much to talk about that I need a few days to properly show not just my appreciation for Duran Duran, but the fan community’s appreciation for the band.  As you probably know, for the last 30 days or so, we have been asking a question each day about fans’ opinions about all things Duran Duran.  We have had a good response and now is when we start to compile the results!  Today’s blog will focus on the first 10 questions we asked, how fans responded and how Rhonda and I answered!

Favorite Song:

When we asked what song were people’s favorite, as you imagine, we got a ton of different responses!  In fact, 66 different songs were mentioned as people’s favorites!  These songs spanned Duran’s entire history from the first album to the current single.  Demos and b-sides were also listed as answers.  What were some of the most popular?

  • Ordinary World
  • Careless Memories
  • The Chauffeur
  • Planet Earth
  • Come Undone
  • New Religion
  • Hold Back the Rain
  • Lonely in Your Nightmare
  • The Reflex

What was the most popular?  This song below!

What are our favorite songs?  If you have been reading this blog for awhile, you might already know this answer!

Rhonda’s favorite song:  Secret Oktober

Amanda’s favorite song:  Planet Earth

On that note, both songs should be featured in upcoming set lists!!!

Favorite Video:

Like favorite song, we got a number of different videos when we asked what people’s favorite Duran Duran video is.  In fact, 27 different videos were given as answers.  What were the most popular?

  • New Moon on Monday
  • Wild Boys
  • Lonely in Your Nightmare
  • Hungry Like the Wolf
  • Rio
  • Nightboat

What was the most popular Duran Duran video?  This one:

What about our favorite video?  We share the same favorite which you can see below!

Favorite Album:

Of course, when we asked about fans’ favorite album, we expected a fewer number of responses since there have only been 13 studio albums up until this point.  Still, we had 14 different albums given as favorites as some included greatest hits and Iive albums.  What were some of the favorites?

  • Self-titled debut
  • All You Need Is Now
  • Notorious
  • Seven and the Ragged Tiger
  • Arena

What was the most favorite among the fans?  This one below:

Like favorite video, we also share a favorite album.  Again, you might be able to guess it!

Favorite Instrumental:

The results of this question went exactly like I expected it to go.  There weren’t many instrumentals given (10) but some of the favorites were:

  • Tel Aviv
  • Faith in This Colour
  • Lake Shore Driving
  • Tricked Out

What was the fan favorite?  No surprise here!

How did we vote?

Rhonda:  Tiger Tiger

Amanda:  Tricked Out

Favorite B-Side:

Ah…those b-sides, those songs that fans often wish were included on regular albums !  The fans listed 17 different songs.  What were some of the favorites given?

  • Late Bar
  • I Believe/All I Need To Know
  • (Come Up and See Me) Make Me Smile
  • Khanada

What was THE favorite among the fans who participated?

How did we vote?

Rhonda–Late Bar

Amanda–Secret Oktober

Favorite Demo:

What about those songs that many, many fans have heard but that never made it to an album or single?  Which ones of those do the fans like?  Here are some more popular answers out of the 17 demos that were given:

  • Salt in the Rainbow
  • Virus
  • What Happens Tomorrow (old version)
  • Tel Aviv (with lyrics)

What was the fan favorite?

What did we choose?  We chose this one:

Favorite Remix:

This was probably the most challenging question as a lot of fans aren’t familiar with a lot of remixes.  Perhaps, a lot of remixes have been heard but the specific names of remixes are unknown.  Here are some more popular remixes out of the 29! that were given as answers:

  • The Reflex (Dance Mix)
  • Out of my Mind (Perfecto Mix)
  • Girls on Film (Night Version

The most common response was Burning the Ground, which some might think isn’t a real remix since it is a mix of MANY songs whereas a remix is a different version of an individual song.

What did Rhonda and I choose?  Again, we chose the same answer!

Most Underrated Song:

For this song, we did not define underrated or specify whether it was the media or the general public or fans who discounted a specific song.  It was left up to interpretation by the fans.  Here are the more popular answers out of the 54 given as responses:

  • Do You Believe in Shame?
  • My Antarctica
  • Box Full of Honey
  • Out of my Mind
  • Falling Down

Here was the most frequent answer, however:

How did we respond to this question?

Rhonda–Before the Rain

Amanda-Red Carpet Massacre (the song)

Most Overrated Song:

This was the flip side to the previous question.  Which song gets too much attention or too much praise?  Again, we did not specify by whom.  How did people respond?  They gave 25 different songs as answers and here are some of the more popular ones:

  • A View to a Kill
  • Union of the Snake
  • Wild Boys
  • The Reflex
  • Rio

The most overrated song, according to the fans?  This one below:

How did the Daily Duranie respond?  Interestingly enough, while we both chose songs from the same era/album, we did different tracks.

Rhonda–Ordinary World

Amanda–Come Undone (You all knew I would say that one, didn’t you?!)

The Song That Should Not Have Made It Past the Cutting Room Floor:

Of course, many fans didn’t want to answer this one.  Yet, we still had a great response as fans can and do have songs that they aren’t fond of.  Here are some the songs given frequently out of the 33 songs that were given as responses:

  • Bedroom Toys
  • Electric Barbarella
  • Can You Deal With It?
  • Hothead
  • Big Thing

What was the most common response to this question?  See below:

What answers did we give?  Like the last question, we picked songs from the same album but different tracks.

Rhonda–Night Runner

Amanda–Zoom In

I loved seeing everyone’s answers to these first 10 questions and I loved compiling them in this format.  Not only can we all learn something about our fan community, but we can celebrate the band this way, too!  Tomorrow, I will compile the next ten questions and the responses and finish up the last 10 on Monday, on the actual holiday!
