The Ranking of the Singles

A couple of weeks ago, I posted a new homework assignment.  This homework assignment, which you can read in full here, basically asked people to rank Duran Duran singles in order of preference.  A number of people turned in their homework on time, which earned them a virtual goal star and a good grade!  Since the due date, I have compiled the results to show the fans’ order of preference when it comes to Duran’s singles.  Perhaps, as the band gets closer to touring, we might remind them which of these singles are popular among their fans and which aren’t!  In future blogs, I will reveal the Daily Duranie rankings and will also analyze the results.  I will explain what I learned from this then!

Without more babbling on my part, I present the fans’ ranking of Duran Duran singles from least favorite to most favorite!!

The Duran Duran Appreciation/Sing Blue Silver Drinking Game

Hey everyone, Amanda and I were talking, and we came up with an idea for a drinking game to use during the Sing Blue Silver viewing party later today.  (Is anyone even remotely surprised that the two of us would mix up something like this??)

Basically, the rules of the game are simple: HAVE FUN!  This is meant to be a flexible game, just to bring a little fun and laughter to the tweets & posts this evening.  Below you will find a list of actions or things that might be said during Sing Blue Silver.  For every action you see tonight, take a sip.  Some things you will see quite often, other things you may only see once. For the bolded actions (or words) at the bottom – those are Daily Duranie “Finish your drink” Bonus Shots!   Now, maybe you are with a group of people and you don’t want to have to look for  15 different actions. Divide the list among your guests. Maybe you don’t want to do all of the actions – pick out a few and go with it. Maybe only do the bonus shots! You can always choose your non-alcoholic drink of choice and still participate in the “treasure-hunt” fun.

Rest Assured – Amanda and I will be participating with the full list.  This should be interesting….

So, here’s the list…and we’ll be tweeting with ya later!

Take one sip of your beverage for the following:
One of the band members laughing
Fans screaming
Anyone with a camera
Any time someone uses the word “tour”
Any time Galaga is mentioned
Any time Spy Matthews is on screen
Any time a limo is seen onscreen
Any time there is an interview
Any time you see fingerless gloves
Any time there is alcohol shown
John licking his lips
Simon making reference to his clothing
Roger twirling his stick
Any time Nick talks about the visual show (or visuals) for the stage
Any time Andy is shown smoking

Daily Duranie Bonus Shots (Finish your drink!)
Spy Matthews says “memo” (meemo)
Andy says “Hello, Good Evening and welcome to our show”
The word “Contrived” is used
John says “I prefer Pepsi myself”
When the band talks about spending more time in nightclubs

Good luck!!  Let’s get this band TRENDING…. we will ONLY be using the hashtag #DDAD14 tonight on our posts!

Duranie Homework: The Singles!!!

It is August.  While I hate to admit it, that means the 2014-2015 school year is just right around the corner.  Many of you might be preparing yourself and/or your children for the upcoming year.  In order to get you back into the school swing of things, I am assigning you homework.  That’s right.  Homework.  Now, before you stop reading, it is Duranie Homework.  You may or may not have to listen to Duran in order to complete it.  Somehow, I think all of you reading this blog might be okay with that kind of work!!!  With that said, please read the directions below carefully on what the assignment is requiring you to do, how to turn in your homework and the due date.

Directions:  Below you will find an alphabetical list of all the Duran Duran singles.  Your task is simply to rank them from your least favorite to your most favorite.  You will indicate that by copying the list and putting the corresponding number next to the song title.  For example, if New Moon on Monday was your LEAST favorite, it would get a number 1.  If Falling Down was your SECOND LEAST favorite, it would have a number 2 next to it and so on until you reach your favorite which would have the number 35 by it.

This assignment does not require any sort of explanation as to the why or how you chose what you chose.  You just need to turn in the list and the numbers.

This assignment must be turned in through either an email sent to dailyduranie@gmail.com or through a private message on Facebook.

It is DUE by Sunday, August 17th.  After that, the list will be compiled in order to show the rankings as a whole group.  We will also provide our rankings and analyze the results.

Here Comes the (Request for) News With Love From Me to You

Dear Duran Duran,

It has been awhile since we last talked.  I have been very busy finishing up the school year and my 16th full year of teaching.  If that wasn’t enough and it always is, I have been shopping for a condo.  Then, this past week, I have been gone on a vacation of sorts, which first took me to North Carolina to visit my sister and my nieces then to Minneapolis to see the White Sox play.  Thus, I haven’t been paying attention in the way that I usually do or in the way that I prefer.  While I have been checking in when I can, it has been pretty sporadic.  At times, it has been very sporadic.  Now, I realize that “news” has been relatively scarce with no or little information about the upcoming album and no tour dates to freak out over.  This fact probably worked to my advantage since my ability to pay attention was compromised by real life.

Now, though, I am home and better able to pay attention.  While I have packing to do to move next month, job searching to do, etc., I will still be around more and be more focused on Duranland.  Thus, it might be a good time to release some interesting tidbits about the upcoming album.  For example, I would be free to hear any and all snippets that are leaked or released.  In fact, if that were to happen now, I could even give my partner-in-crime a call to discuss, dissect, analyze and squee over any and all snippets.  The same would be true for things like song titles, album title or release dates.  I’m available for any and all of those, too.  Beyond album previews, I would also be able to properly deal with any and all news regarding shows, meaning that I could adequately plot.

This time of extra availability will last only until the end of August.  Thus, please feel free to release any and all information between now and then.  One exception might be in early August when Rhonda and I are planning to get together to get some work done in person, in a distraction-free time and place.  On one hand, that might be the best time to release information since we would be able to react, discuss, analyze, and/or plot in person.  On the other hand, it would distract us from our mission.  Perhaps, that time, then, should be reserved for only the biggest and most important news.  I will let you know exactly when that time will be when we know it.

On that note, I look forward to my summer.  I cannot wait to get into my new place.  I am optimistic that my job search and my focus on Daily Duranie related projects will be highly productive and successful.  Last but not least, though, I look forward to the summer of Duran Duran news and being able to react to it the way I am meant to!!!

Your dedicated fan,

Amanda

This is obviously a very serious letter that I fully expect Duran Duran to read.   Obviously, this was written tongue-in-cheek.  I don’t expect Duran Duran or anyone in connection to Duran Duran to read this or to release news based on my schedule.  This post was done solely in fun.  After all, dreams are free!

Spring Duranie Homework: Videos!!

It is time for some more homework!  Now, now, if you guys are anything like my students, you are probably groaning at the thought that you would have homework.  Never fear, though, Duranies!  I promise you that this homework assignment will be super fun and not that challenging.  So, what is this homework???

This is simple.  It is just like the Top 25 Duran Duran homework, which you can remember by reading this blog post here.  Instead of being about songs, though, this challenge is going to be about videos.  Yes, you read that right.  Instead of it being Top 25 Duran Duran video, it will be about the Top 10 Duran Duran videos.  Here are the details:

*You will send a list of your 10 favorite Duran Duran or Duran Duran related videos (side projects and solo projects) in order of preference.  This means that your number 1 video is your favorite Duran Duran or Duran related video.  Number 2 would be your next favorite and so on.  The ranking is important as this is how I will compile everyone’s list to determine the fan community’s list of Top 10 Videos.  A number one video would get 10 points whereas a number ten video would only get 1 point.  The 10 videos that get the most points will be on the fan community’s list.

*These lists must be sent PRIVATELY through Twitter DMs, Facebook messages or email (dailyduranie@gmail.com).

*The lists are due on May 16th!  No exceptions.  No late homework will be accepted.

*Like we did for the Top 25 Songs, we will compile the lists and reveal the fan community’s favorites here on the blog.  We will also reveal our lists and analyze the results.

*Now, of course, in order to help out with this homework, I have provided this list with every video that I know of:

Analysis of Top 25 Duran Duran Songs

A couple of weeks ago, we revealed the Top 25 Duran Duran songs that were compiled from the top 25 lists that many fans submitted to us.  You can find the results here.  Then, last week, we posted our choices for the Top 25 Duran Duran songs.  While you might have thought we were done with this task, you were wrong.  I promised to go through the selections and provide some information about the songs chosen as well as what the choices might say about Duran Duran fans.

The number of songs to appear on people’s lists: 159 different songs were listed.  I couldn’t believe how the list of songs kept growing!  Clearly, this shows that Duran’s catalog is very large, at this point!

The albums represented in order by the points they received.  The songs are listed in order of preference.

Rio-2865 (New Religion, The Chauffeur, Save a Prayer, Hold Back the Rain, Rio, Lonely in Your Nightmare, Last Chance on the Stairway, Hungry Like the Wolf,  My Own Way).  All songs from the album were listed.

Self-titled-2547 points (Careless Memories, Planet Earth, Friends of Mine, Girls on Film, Sound of Thunder, Nightboat, Is There Something I Should Know, Anyone Out There, Tel Aviv, To the Shore).  All songs from the album were listed.  I included both Is There Something I Should Know and To the Shore.

All You Need is Now-1903 (All You Need Is Now, Before the Rain, The Man Who Stole a Leopard, Girl Panic, Mediterranea, Leave a Light On, Being Followed, Safe, Too Bad You’re So Beautiful, Runway Runaway, Blame the Machines, Networker Nation).  71% of the songs were listed from the album.  I used the 17 track Best Buy exclusive.

Seven and the Ragged Tiger-1493 (The Seventh Stranger, New Moon on Monday, The Reflex, Tiger Tiger, Shadows on Your Side, Union of the Snake, Of Crime and Passion, Cracks in the Pavement, I Take the Dice).  All songs from the album were listed.

Astronaut-1152 (Sunrise, Nice, What Happens Tomorrow, Bedroom Toys, Want You More, Virus, Still Breathing, Astronaut, Finest Hour, Chains, Point of No Return, Taste the Summer, One of Those Days).  All songs were listed.  I included Virus as it appeared on the Japanese version.

The Wedding Album-1062 (Ordinary World, Come Undone, None of the Above, Too Much Information, Love Voodoo, Breath After Breath, Sin of the City, Shelter, Femme Fatale, UMF, Drowning Man).  85% of the songs from the album were listed.

Big Thing-744(Do You Believe in Shame, I Don’t Want Your Love,  Palomino, The Edge of America, Land, All She Wants Is, Lake Shore Driving, Drug, Too Late Marlene, Big Thing).  83% of songs listed.

Notorious-666 (Vertigo, Notorious, Skin Trade, A Matter of Feeling, American Science, Hold Me, Winter Marches On, Proposition, So Misled, Meet el Presidente).  All songs from the album were listed.

Red Carpet Massacre-469(Falling Down, Box Full O Honey, The Valley, Night Runner, Skin Divers, Cry Baby Cry, She’s Too Much, Tempted, Last Man Standing, Red Carpet Massacre, Zoom In, Tricked Out).  92% of songs from the album were listed.  I included Cry Baby Cry for the same reason as Virus.

Liberty-439 (Serious, My Antarctica, Violence of Summer, All Along the Water, First Impression, Liberty, Read My Lips, Hothead, Downtown, Venice Drowning).  91% of songs listed.

Medazzaland- 313(Out of my Mind, Big Bang Generation, Electric Barbarella, Midnight Sun, Be My Icon, Buried in the Sand, Michael You’ve Got a Lot to Answer For, Medazzaland, Who Do You Think You Are, So Long Suicide).  83% of songs listed.

Thank You-284 (White Lines, Perfect Day, Lay Lady Lay, Drive By, I Wanna Take You Higher, Watching the Detectives, Success, Thank You).  67% of songs listed.

Pop Trash-204 (Playing with Uranium, Someone Else Not Me, Pop Trash Movie, Starting to Remember, The Sun Doesn’t Shine Forever, Last Day on Earth, Lava Lamp, Mars Meets Venus).  67% of songs listed.

Obviously, all albums were represented.  I was not surprised that the top 3 albums were Rio, Self-Titled, and All You Need Is Now.  I was also not surprised that the bottom 3 were Medazzaland, Thank You and Pop Trash.  I was a little surprised that Thank You did better than Pop Trash.  There were a few surprises to about the songs within the albums.  For example, Falling Down was the favorite from Red Carpet Massacre, collectively, as opposed to Night Runner or Skin Divers.  Likewise, I was surprised that Electric Barbarella wasn’t the favorite in Medazzaland.  Lastly, I was surprised that My Antarctica is as loved as it is off of Liberty.

The singles chosen in order of preference: Careless Memories, Ordinary World, Planet Earth, Save a Prayer, All You Need Is Now, Come Undone, Rio, New Moon on Monday, The Reflex, Girls on Film, Sunrise, Wild Boys, Nice, Girl Panic, Serious, Do You Believe in Shame, A View to a Kill, Leave a Light On, Is There Something I Should Know, Out of my Mind, I Don’t Want Your Love, What Happens Tomorrow, Notorious, Hungry Like the Wolf, Union of the Snake, White Lines, Perfect Day, Falling Down, My Own Way, Skin Trade, Playing with Uranium, All She Wants Is, Too Much Information, Someone Else Not Me, Violence of Summer, Electric Barbarella, Meet el Presidente, Last Day on Earth, and Burning the Ground.  Every single made it to the list.  Did the biggest hits do better than the rest of the singles?  Not necessarily.  Careless Memories was not a huge hit on the charts but is with the fans.

The songs that had videos to go with in order of preference:  Careless Memories, Ordinary World, Planet Earth, The Chauffeur, Friends of Mine, Save a Prayer, All You Need Is Now, Come Undone, Rio, Lonely in Your Nightmare, New Moon on Monday, The Reflex, Girls on Film, Sunrise, Wild Boys, Girl Panic, Serious, Nightboat, Do You Believe in Shame, A View to a Kill, Is There Something I Should Know, Out of my Mind, I Don’t Want Your Love, What Happens Tomorrow, Notorious, Hungry Like the Wolf, Union of the Snake, White Lines, Perfect Day, Falling Down, My Own Way, Skin Trade, All She Wants Is, Too Much Information, Someone Else Not Me, Violence of Summer, Breath After Breath, Electric Barbarella, Meet el Presidente, and Burning the Ground.  I can’t think of a single video that was not listed.  Again, their most well-known videos were not necessarily at the top of the list.

Cover songs in order of preference:  White Lines, Perfect Day, Make Me Smile, Lay Lady Lay, Instant Karma, I Wanna Take You Higher, Needle and the Damage Done, House of the Rising Sun, Watching the Detectives, Success, Thank You, Boys Keep Swinging.

B-sides in order of preference:  Secret Oktober, Late Bar, Like an Angel, Khanada, I Believe All / I Need to Know, Fallen Angel, Faith in This Colour, We Need You, Sinner or Saint, Faster Than Light, Yo Bad Azizi, Waterbabies, Decadance.

Demos/Unreleased tracks in order of preference:  Beautiful Colours, Salt in the Rainbow,  Lonely Business, Matter of Fact, Pretty Ones.  Clearly, there are many demos from Astronaut that people really like.

There were a number of songs only chosen once, which are listed here in order of preference on that person’s list:  Lay Lady Lay, Zoom In, Instant Karma, Lonely Business, Burning the Ground, Femme Fatale, Lava Lamp, Waterbabies, House of the Rising Sun, Watching the Detectives, Hothead, Michael You’ve Got a Lot to Answer For, Networker Nation, UMF, A Matter of Fact, Medazzaland, One of Those Days, Success, Thank You, Pretty Ones, Tricked Out, Who Do You Think You Are, Boys Keep Swinging, Decadance, Too Late Marlene, Venice Drowning, Big Thing, Drowning Man, So Long Suicide and Mars Meets Venus.

What does all this prove?  I think the biggest take away here is one we already knew.  Duran Duran fans are diverse in their opinions and preferences.  While most seem to love songs off of Rio, the first album, and All You Need Is Now, there are many songs that people love off the other albums.  What did you learn?  What surprised you or confirmed what you already knew?

-A

P.S.  I have to admit that I really enjoyed doing this.  I loved getting people’s responses, organizing them, and analyzing the results.  I had so much fun that I want to do something like this again and I don’t want to wait until next year.  I plan on doing something similar for videos.  Any other suggestions?  Thanks!!!

1.  New Religion

Thoughts?  Reactions?  Is what you expected?  My first thought after looking at the top 10 was, “Why isn’t Duran playing New Religion live?  Clearly, it is a fan favorite.”  While they do play Careless Memories, sometimes, and have played The Chauffeur, Friends of Mine and Hold Back the Rain, at times, perhaps, they would be wise to play them more often.  Then, I have to ask, why in the world do they not play Secret Oktober?!?  Yes, I know that they have played it a few times in recent years but a few is not enough.  Clearly.  What do the rest of you think?  How did your favorites do?  Did they make the list?

Top 25 Duran Duran Songs Part 1

This is it!!!!  Well, this is the first half of “it”!  Today is the day that I reveal part of the top Duran Duran songs (songs 25 to 11) as picked by us (the fans!).  First, let me thank each and every person that sent us a list!  Most said that it was hard, particularly to order the songs, but that they enjoyed it.  I know that it took me a long time to make my list as well as to compile the results (hence the lateness of today’s blog), but I think it was worth it!  Now, if you didn’t do it, but wish that you had, have no fear!  We plan on making this an annual event.  You can send your list next year!!!  Second, I wanted to clarify one point.  A lot of lists contained specifics like certain remixes or certain live versions of songs, which was cool.  I ended up adding those to the totals of the original song.  Otherwise, those songs/votes would have been lost in the shuffle!  Without making you all wait any longer, I now present the favorite Duran Duran songs 25 to 11.

25. Girl Panic

24.  Nice

23.  Wild Boys

22.  Sunrise

21.  Girls on Film

20.  Last Chance on the Stairway

19.  The Man Who Stole a Leopard

18.  Before the Rain

17.  The Reflex

16.  New Moon on Monday

15.  Lonely in Your Nightmare

14.  Rio

13.  Come Undone

12.  All You Need Is Now

11.  Late Bar

Next Saturday, we will reveal the top 10 Duran Duran songs!  After that, I will do a little analyzing about what songs were chosen and what that says about our fandom and our preferences!  Were you surprised by any on here so far?  Any predictions for what songs will make the Top 10 now that you have seen 11 through 25???  Come on, be brave!  Make some guesses!

Reaching Out, Calling Out: Top 25 Song Reminder and Predictions

Next week is Valentine’s Day.  Normally, that is day that I dread and not for the reason you think.  As a middle school teacher, Valentine’s Day is a day filled with heightened emotions and drama.  Yet, this year, I have something to look forward to!  I get the final results for our fun Duranie homework!  That’s right, kids, you have one more week to get your list to me with your Top 25 Duran Duran songs!!!!  If you have no idea what I’m talking about, you can get all of the details and directions on how to participate here.  Basically, we will be compiling everyone’s favorite songs into a solid list of 25 based on the position of the songs in people’s lists.  We have gotten many, many lists so far but I would love to get lists from every single Duranie!  After all, the more lists we get, the more accurate the compiled list will be, statistically speaking!!!!

I have to say that I have found the results so incredibly fascinating.  As someone who studies things like groups of people and patterns of behavior, I can’t help but be interested in the patterns I have seen or the lack of patterns.  I had some predictions in my mind based on discussions we have had here or observations I have made throughout my tenure in the Duran fan community.  Some of my predictions have been proven true and others…not so much!  So, with a week to go, I figured it might be fun for all of you to make some predictions yourself about the results.  Then, you, too, can compare your ideas with the results and with what is shared about the results.

*How many different songs do you think made it on people’s lists?  (Obviously, not everyone is going to have the same songs as favorites, right?  So how many different songs were named by, at least, someone?)

*Are all the albums represented?

*Which albums are represented the most?  The least?

*Are the majority of songs on people’s lists hits?  Were they the singles?

*How many of the songs had videos to go with them?  Do the fact that they do or don’t seem to make a difference in people’s preferences?

*Are ballads more popular or are songs you can rock out to more popular?

*How many are cover songs?

*How many are b-sides?

*How many are demos that clearly should have made the album?

*How many were from the height of their popularity?  Their 1990s comeback?  Post reunion?

*Which songs do you assume with make the final 25?  (Which songs do you think are most popular in Duranland?)

*Which songs are played live all the time?

*Which songs should be played live from the list?

Perhaps, these questions don’t interest you.  What are you looking forward to finding out the most?  What didn’t I think of to analyze?  Ponder?  Seriously, if you have predictions for any of the questions above, I would love for you to comment here so that we can all compare later.  If you are anything like me, you will probably get some right and some…not so right.  Either way, it is okay as this is all in fun!  I can’t wait for the final results and for the predictions!!!  Each time we do something like this, I learn so much about our fan community!  I love it!

Speaking of learning about our fan community, if you haven’t already figured out by now, we have moved our “daily” question/poll/vote over here now.  There are a number of reasons for this.  First, I don’t have to count both on Facebook and twitter anymore and hope that I’m accurate in my counting.  Second, it eliminates the possibility of people trying to vote “both” or first one answer and then the other.  People have to choose as was intended.  Lastly, people can see the current results right after they vote!      I will always try to remember people on Facebook and Twitter when a new question/poll is up, but you can always look for it at the top of our home page as it will always be a “featured” blog!  No worries, we will still be asking a new question each and every day.  Now, if you have been following this series of questions (pictures of the band members!!!), you know that we have just completed Simon and have moved on to Roger.  Lots of people sent in Roger pictures so it will take awhile to get through him.  Then, we will move on to the rest.  If you are interested in  the order, you can read the original blog post about it here.   Just like the top 25, I hope everyone keeps voting daily as the more people who vote, the more accurate the results!

Now, fellow fans, make sure you are sending us your list of your Top 25 Duran Duran songs (b-sides, covers and demos are okay but no side or solo project songs) numbered in order by next Friday, February 14th!!!  You can send them via email at dailyduranie@gmail.com or through a private message on Facebook!    It may not be the easiest of assignments but it is fun!!!
