Duran Inspired Cocktails

Happy Friday everyone!  As you are reading this blog post, I’ll be on my way to the Chicagoland area to attend an anniversary party for my aunt and uncle.  This kind of event doesn’t necessarily scream excitement or fun for me, but I appreciate being able to see family and, more importantly, take my parents to see their siblings.  That said, the event begins with an hour of cocktails, which is generally up my alley.  Unfortunately, these cocktails should be pretty standard unlike what Duran Duran posted yesterday.  Did anyone see this post about “Taylor Made Cocktails”?  If not, go here now.

The idea is simple.  The author of the post shared how she fell in love with the band in the 1980s and even had the good fortune of meeting John Taylor at one of his book signings.  In response to her birthday (and John’s), she is finally creating a list of Duran inspired cocktails.  On top of sharing her first name, I also share the belief that this is a fabulous idea.  In fact, Rhonda and I have been lucky enough to have some Duran themed beverages at a couple of our events, in fact,  including a Sing Blue Silver and a Stolen Leopard to name a couple.  So, what kind of cocktails were created?  Let’s take a look.

Taylor Made Cocktails:

  • Planet Earth
  • Girls on Film
  • Vieux to a Kill
  • Dance Into the Fire
  • Save It ‘Til the Morning After
  • Last Chance on the Stairway
  • Sing Blue Silver
  • Try Not to Bruise It
  • Lonely Satellite
  • Secret Oktober
  • Ragged Tiger
  • Where Is All You Angels?
  • Meet el Presidente

Single Pours:

  • I Suppose That’s Very Nice
  • Waiting for the Night Boat
  • Room 7609

One of the things that I love about this list is that credit is given to the bartender who created the drink as well as the ingredients and how to make it.  This means that every Duranie out there can make these for themselves!  In looking through the drinks, I would like to try them all, but I can tell that I would need to hit the liquor store first and to practice!  That said, I always appreciate learning something new so I would be definitely open to finding out how to make some new drinks.  Of course, I need a special occasion to make these, which has me thinking.

It seems to me that it has been quite awhile since we held an online party.  Now, I’ll admit that I have not been in much of a party mood lately.  The news has been anything but pleasant.  Yet, I am reminded that it is important to celebrate what matters to you especially when times are tough.  So, what do the rest of you think?  Would you be up for an online party?  We could create a YouTube playlist and hang out on social media like we have in the past.  Of course, I’m open to other ideas, too, if you all have any.  Then, we would have to figure out a date to hold it.  July?  August?  Duran Duran Appreciation Day?  Obviously, I would want Rhonda to be in on this, too, so we need to see what dates work for her.  I know that I could use a little fun and a few hours loving Duran Duran.  What about the rest of you?

And we can dance together: Pre-Show Parties!

I tweeted yesterday that whenever the @dailyduranie twitter is blowing up on my phone, I know the time is coming.  TOUR time.  Pre-Show parties are planned and happening!

I leave California, bound by plane for Chicago’s Midway airport in about two weeks.  So yes, tour time is coming! I can hardly believe it. It seems like six months has flown by since we bought pre-sale tickets, although I know it’s been less.  I’ve been busy, to say the least. Funny how writing will make the time fly right by.

Yesterday, Amanda and I spent a few hours solidifying details for the Daily Duranie pre-show parties we are hosting for this tour.  We can’t be everywhere, but we’re hosting what we can, in between moments of just being fans ourselves!

We’ve Got Wristbands!

We will have wristbands and raffle tickets for Duran-items for sale at all of our pre-show parties, so bring cash with you.  The proceeds will go towards our convention fund (save the date: we’re doing another Durandemonium August 10-11 2017!)

July 8 & 9 (Ravinia – Chicago)

For both nights of Ravinia, we are hosting pre-show gatherings on the lawn area by the pavilion where the band will be playing.  I’m including a map with the area to look for us (and our Daily Duranie sign), but you should know a few other things as well:

  1. Gates open at 4pm for Ravinia
  2. Our gathering begins at 5:00pm – 6:30pm.
  3. We will have a couple of blankets and towels but you might want to bring one of your own to sit down on.
  4. This is BYO-everything.  We’re just meeting and coordinating as a group to hang out and mingle before the show.
  5. Food is available at Ravinia, but it is also common to bring your own picnic – it’s whatever you want to do.
  6. We are meeting somewhere on the grassy knoll area that is directly behind the pavilion seats. If you walk in the main gates and go past the Martin Theater (should be on your right), we’re going to be closer to the pavilion, also on the right side.  See map for details.
  7. Look for the Daily Duranie poster!

7/13 (Molson Amphitheater – Toronto)

We’ve set up a group reservation at the Hard Rock Cafe in Toronto, which is near the Amphitheater. For this party, we definitely need your serious RSVP on the Facebook event page for this gathering (link provided below)  Please do NOT RSVP if you’re not going to the show, do not live anywhere near the US and/or do not plan to be there that night. We love that everyone wants to be with us in spirit and we appreciate that – but please do not RSVP unless you are seriously attending.

The party will begin at 4:30 pm at the Hard Rock in Toronto, and it will be a blast!  Depending upon the number of people planning to join us, we’ll either do a large table or do more of a stand-up table and mingle set-up.  The Hard Rock has been awesome about working with us in the past and so we really appreciate their ongoing support for our parties!

7/29 (Mandalay Bay Event Center, Las Vegas)

For this event, we are still coordinating the timing with DDM so that our party will not interfere with the VIP Cocktail Reception taking place that evening.  What I can tell you though, is that we’re going to do our own Happy Hour/Cocktail gathering at Eye Candy in the Mandalay Bay Hotel.  This is simply for drinks and chatting, and the venue was chosen for its central location and very open seating (the bar opens at 3pm, and my best guess is that we’ll meet-up around 4:30 if not a bit earlier).  Pro tip: there is no food available at this bar, so you should plan and eat accordingly!

Naturally, we’ll keep everyone updated as much as possible from here, but for the most accurate information and to let us know if you’re coming to any of the parties we’re hosting, please see the Facebook events page….and spread the invites to your friends!  The more the merrier!  Please let us know you’re attending.  We can’t wait to see as many of you as possible!

We Danced, We Laughed, We Chatted!

I’m not going to be around much tomorrow, so I’m writing this on Sunday night.  With any luck, I am going to be at a day spa, relaxing and “balancing my qi”…as my youngest likes to say.  There will be no dancing on the valentine for me tomorrow…hopefully just some lavender-scented bliss.

Every once in a while, I tend to get so caught up in the motor that runs Daily Duranie (and my house) that I actually forget to BE a fan. I forget to take time to stop and smell the roses much beyond the occasional “listen to Paper Gods” in the car. That bugs me, too, because here I am, trying to write a blog about what it is really like to be a fan, and yet sometimes I am hard pressed to even know what to say!

Don’t get me wrong, it’s not that being a DD fan is drudgery. Far, far from it. It’s the peripheral stuff. You know….life: taking the kids to school, trying to put together a lesson here at home. Catching up on Twitter only to find that a couple of friends had a fantastic (and yet way way way over my head) conversation about a group I know next-to-nothing about, but very much want to learn. I catch DDHQ posting a question about favorite lyrics from Paper Gods…and my mind goes completely blank. (I truly sat back and had to think for a few minutes. “What in the hell is ON that album anyway???”) In the interim I realize I’ve shot away 30 minutes that I should have been reading my world history textbook in order to teach a lesson to my son. There’s not much time for watching videos. For laughing. For enjoying being a fan.

This (school) year seems a bit worse than previous ones as far as time goes, likely because I’ve taken on some added responsibilities by deciding to homeschool my very youngest. Sometimes I question my sanity with that decision. (like right now in this moment) Even so, I miss feeling like I can sit around and chat with my friends on Twitter or Facebook…or even on our message boards without facing some pinnacle of crisis later in the week for not spending that 30 minutes doing one of the other 10,000 things I was supposed to do during that time. I am sure I’m not alone.

That’s why last night was so precious. I was able to spend four beautiful hours just watching videos and chatting with friends, both old and new, on the Daily Duranie boards. We have a “shout box” built into the boards, which acts as a chatroom – and it’s open all the time. (I noticed a few people saying they couldn’t find the shout box – when you get to the message boards, scroll all the way down to the bottom and it’s there.) We made it into a party, called it “Dancing on the Valentine” and even gave it a theme drink. (because why not?) We made up a video playlist and hung out watching videos and chatting. I can’t even tell you how much I needed a night like that. That’s the  thing about Daily Duranie, we do this as much for ourselves as we do everyone else.

It isn’t ever very hard to remember why I became a fan. I’ve been told that this blog shows just how much love Amanda and I have for the band, even underneath all the blogs where we’re kicking their asses about one thing or another. It’s just that sometimes, I forget to actually be one.

Then there are the friendships. Oh, the friendships. It is easily the best part for me…I love seeing fans find other fans, connect and build a friendship. Hosting chats and online (and in-person) parties brings people together. Giving fans a place to meet and cultivate friendships begins to grow a loyal community, so anything that I can think of to make that happen is exactly what we’re going to do next.

Hosting chats isn’t exactly in my comfort zone. I’m really more of the type to sit back with my beverage and watch the scene unfold in person. You’re far more likely to find me in a dark corner talking to one person at a time than in the middle of a crowd. But, when it comes to Daily Duranie, somehow…I find a way to make it happen. And really, I need those moments.

Even more? I loved watching a lot of videos from Live in London, or smiling at the video for What Happens Tomorrow. I even saw clips I hadn’t seen before (there are a lot out there!!), like the band covering Starman, or the interview they did with Howard Stern back in 2006 (or something like that). In fact, I’m hoping to squeeze in a few more videos before bed tonight. (don’t tell anyone!)

Those moments, however far and few in between, renew my spirit and rejuvenate my fandom.  I hope they do the same for you, and that if you missed our little party last night, that when we announce the next one, you’ll find your way to hang out with us.

Tonight’s PARTY!!!

It is party time!!!  Well, it is almost party time!  That’s right, tonight is our Dancing on the Valentine Party!  The purpose of tonight is super simple!  It is to break the feeling the “winter marches on” feeling, to celebrate Duran Duran and to have fun!!!  What could be better than that!?!  I know that I’m really looking forward to it as real life has been a lot tiring and stressful as of late.  We hope that you, too, are looking forward to it and ready to have some fun!!!

Onto the details!  This is an online party!  That means you don’t have to travel anywhere or brave winter winter to get to the festivities!  You can enjoy it from your own house or from wherever you can get the internet.  How do you attend the party?  Simple!  You do two easy things.

  1.  You tune into the playlist that we will be making public and starting at 8 pm Central/6 pm Pacific on the Daily Duranie YouTube channel, which you can find here.  The idea is simple.  We all watch the same things at the same time then we chat, laugh, squee and whatever else seems appropriate at the time.
  2. The conversation part of the party will be taking place on the Daily Duranie message board, which you can get to here!  Once there, if you haven’t already registered, do that.  Then, scroll to the bottom of the board to see the “SHOUTBOX” area.  This is where the live chatting will take place!  Make sense?

Now, it wouldn’t be a Daily Duranie party without a drink for the night!  Our very timely drink is called “Valentine Stones”.  The ingredients are super simple:  Vodka, Cranberry Juice, Lime over ice. We recommend making and drinking this throughout the night (You all know that we will be!).  The drink, in fact, could be consumed while playing tonight’s Dancing on the Valentine Drinking Game!

Dancing on the Valentine Drinking Game Rules!

Take one sip of the beverage of your choice (alcoholic or not) when you see any of the following in the videos that we put together!

  • Any dorky dance moves/dancing
  • Any references to sex
  • JoSi moments
  • DoJo moments
  • Roger twirls his stick (drum stick, people…get your mind out of the gutter!)
  • Nick takes a picture
  • John claps
  • Simon plays an instrument (his voice doesn’t count here, people.  We don’t want people to actually die playing the game!)
  • The color RED is shown
  • The color PINK is shown
  • One of the band members uses the word “LOVE” in a song or interview
  • Anyone in the video is seen drinking
  • A party is shown

I recommend printing the drinking game list or writing it down so it is right in front while you watch!  That said, I’m sure that we will all be reminding each other while we watch and party together tonight!

I think that covers it!  If you have any questions between now and party time, feel free to ask away on the Event Page from our Facebook Page, which you can get to here!

Now, I better make sure I have enough vodka to get me through the night!  Looking forward to being with all of you later!

Let’s Dance! (On the Valentine!)

Today is my paperwork day, which means my blogging time is extremely limited…but I will leave you with this thought:

Are YOU planning to hang out and do a little Dancing on the Valentine??  Don’t forget, next Saturday, February 13th, we are hosting an online party, complete with videos — and we desperately need your input!

Is there are a particular interview, performance, appearance and/or video that you haven’t seen in years but would love to watch? Is there a special YouTube treasure that you’ve been trying to find? Do you just want to sit back and watch the JoSi unfold???  How about Simon in those sparkly pants, or Roger’s stick twirling??  WE NEED YOU!  Run (don’t walk) right over to the Facebook event page for Dancing on the Valentine and share your ideas. Amanda and I will put together a YouTube playlist for the event and post all of the details in the coming week so everyone is set for some fun.

If you can’t make it for the entire party (9pm EST, 8pm CST, 6pm PST to whenever we are ready to drop!)  – feel free just to drop by. I am in the middle of setting up either a chat room or something similar (again, details to soon follow) – and for the price of attendance (which by the way is FREE), in-and-out privileges are guaranteed.

We hope to see you next Saturday, February 13!
