Duran Duran Summer Tour 2016: The Sequel!

I am currently glancing nervously around my house as I sit here composing this blog posting. Later tonight, Amanda arrives, and then we prepare ourselves for the next set of shows we are attending together on our Duran Duran Summer Tour 2016. The final four we’ll do on this leg of the Paper Gods tour. (I stopped just short of saying it’s the last four we’ll do for the entire tour because well, you never know. Maybe.)

At this moment, my house looks like we just moved here. Likely because my oldest just moved out this past weekend and took some of my old furniture with her. This only poses a problem because we now no longer have couches in our formal living area, nor do we have furniture in her old bedroom. I have no time, no money (thanks to Duran Duran! Ha ha!!), and really no plans to figure out what I’m going to do with her old room until I get back from my own vacation at the end of August. But hey, at least there’s more room around here!

If that weren’t enough (and it is really is), I’m also trying to find time to help my mom. As most know, she lost her partner last month to a heart attack. All of us are still adjusting, and the agonizing last few details, such as cleaning out his apartment, need finishing. I will no sooner drop Amanda back off at the airport, and I’ll be packing up our trailer for a huge camping trip to the Grand Tetons and Yellowstone. In many ways (as per the usual), I have no business leaving this house to see Duran Duran.

Never mind that for me, I’ve continued to put aside the idea that this might actually be the last bit of travel I do for this band, at least for the foreseeable future. To begin with, I continue to hear that they’re planning to tour other parts of the world next year. So that’s 2017, in a nutshell. After that, I’m not sure what they’ll do, if anything.

Isn’t that idea strange? When I was a kid, I was blissfully unaware of anything really being final. I mean, it never occurred to me that they would someday stop recording. I suppose that’s also why when Roger and Andy left, I was so shocked. The thought just hadn’t occurred to me prior.  But then they reunited, and because I had already lived through band members leaving once, I knew it could happen again. Andy left a second time, and since then, I won’t lie—with the close of every album “cycle”, so to speak, I wonder if they’ll dare to try it all again. I want them to keep going, but I admittedly try to prepare myself that they will not.

Fans get furious when we—Amanda and I—even type those words here. No one wants the story to end, least of all us. I mean, think about it—what use is Daily Duranie if there’s no band?!? So before anyone accuses us of wanting them to quit, think before you type. On the same token, we’re not blind, and we recognize they could easily quit now and never look back. I wish I could will myself back to never thinking about it, but nowadays the question just seems to hang in the air, and I cannot tell you how many times I am personally asked the question—“Do you think they’ll record or tour again, Rhonda?“—at every single meet-up or event we attend.

I wish I had a crystal ball. I know that when I go to these last four shows of mine, each time I hear the little bit of “New Moon on Monday” that they’ve incorporated into their set, I’m going to try to live in that moment and not think about anything else. However, even as I type right now, I know there’s going to be a teeny piece of me (one that will probably try to grow bigger with each passing show) that is going to count down the amount of times I will still get to hear that song live. Four, then three, then two, and then one. And then what?

I am really not very good at endings. One of the most difficult things I had to do when writing the manuscript was finish the conclusion. The story shouldn’t end. I never want to write those words: “The end.” So I won’t. I am hoping for more shows, musicals, ballets, and/or work to come from people like Anna and Dom. I’ll be planning another convention for next August in Chicago, blogging each day, and writing more books. Yes, more books!!  And when the band says they’re recording again, I’ll smile.

Duran Duran and Lindsay Lohan?

Not sure about everyone else in the world, but I really was not ready to be greeted by the sight of a photo of Duran Duran and Lindsay Lohan this morning.  Moreover, I was definitely not ready to deal with the speculation that somehow because that photo exists – Lindsay must be singing in the studio with the band for #DD14.

Duran Duran Lindsay Lohan
Lindsay Lohan – Instagram

So that’s my Monday so far.  How’s yours?

Let me be clear (and fair).  I don’t care about Ali Lohan (Lindsay’s sister and the other female in the photo on the far right). She is entitled to her own career, and I wish her well. If out of the 3 or 4 billion people that are on the planet – it was HER voice that they needed for this album to make it perfect – then you know, great. I think it’s rather unfortunate that her sister’s reputation will continue to follow her, but those are the breaks. On the other hand, I don’t know that I care that much about Lindsay Lohan either. I think her relevance to the world is way overstated, but apparently she still has fans that grab on to her every word.  You can’t argue that she’s got 2.4 million followers on Instagram and another 8.64 million on Twitter…where she made sure to mention that she was “recording with some greats”.  Those greats being of course, Duran Duran. Duran Duran and Lindsay Lohan. Good Lord.

Speculation is a funny thing.  It was my understanding over the weekend that it was only Ali, or Aliana as she goes by now professionally, that would be working with the band, but then this photo comes out and yes, the internet seems to have grabbed onto the idea that Lindsay didn’t learn enough from her debut that no – singing probably isn’t a proper career choice for her, and that maybe she’s really singing with Duran Duran.  She even made sure to repost a photo of her album, Speak on Instagram…as though she was spending serious time contemplating her past and getting her followers excited by the prospects of another album. (If I were her, I would be looking at my past and trying to remember where it all went ass over teakettle so I wouldn’t do it again, but again – that’s just me.)  So the run down as I know it stands at: Mr. Hudson, John Frusciante, Nile Rodgers, Mark Ronson, then of course Spike Stent and whomever else worked on the engineering, production and mixing…and maybe Aliana and Lindsay Lohan. Talk about an all-star cast.  You’d almost think they were looking for a hit.

I won’t lie, when I saw the picture of Duran Duran and Lindsay Lohan this morning (that was originally taken for Linsday and posted on her Instagram), I balked. I recoiled a bit. I even posted on Duran Duran’s Facebook status (where even DDHQ said they were surprised by this one) that I thought it was gross. I did, however, go back and delete my comment because I realized that posting something unkind on the band’s Facebook post did nothing but insult the post. The band doesn’t care, and I really don’t blame them. It’s probably fair to say I’m not the only fan out there that was a little disgusted by the idea of Duran Duran and Lindsay Lohan being in the studio together, judging from the comments I saw – but still others were ever supportive of the band’s choices as always, saying that Lindsay deserved another chance and that of course she thinks it’s cool to hang with Duran Duran because they’re the best. In all fairness, it hasn’t been confirmed, denied or even mentioned by DDHQ whether or not Lindsay Lohan was just visiting or if she was truly recording, and I still suspect it’s only her sister that was doing any vocals, and maybe Lindsay herself was capitalizing on some possible press by posting the Instagram photo and commenting on being in the studio.

I think one person summed it up best on Duran Duran’s Facebook though, by simply saying “Oh no” as their comment on the photo with Duran Duran and Lindsay Lohan.  My feelings exactly.

April Katy Kafe with Roger Taylor!

It’s April Katy Kafé time…and that means Roger Taylor is in the Kafé!

As always, I dutifully listened to the Kafé, took copious notes, and am ready to once again summarize, translate, commentate, and flat out poke fun at Mr. Taylor, although I will go easy on him since of course it is his birthday month. (Happy Birthday Roger!!)  It is a very tough job, but I do it all for you.  For YOU.

I will reiterate my disclaimer: I am not rewriting the Kafé word for word (are you kidding me?), you are merely getting my point of view, and if you were to listen to the Kafé yourself (and I wholeheartedly recommend that you do), it is extremely likely that you might hear things differently.  This is my blog, I write it as I hear it. Done.

Mr. Hudson:  While I was a little confused as to whether Mr. Hudson was writing with the band or producing (and I still kind of am), Roger said that Mr. Hudson approached management about working with the band. Wendy called the band, mentioned that he was interested in working with them, and the band agreed to have him join them in the studio for a meeting and go from there.  From what I could gather, it sounds as though he worked with them on two songs – this Kafé was done a week ago or so (I’ve lost track of time) when Mr. Hudson was currently in the studio with them.  One of the songs is slower but is still “groovy” and has an “amazing chorus”.  The other is more uptempo.  Roger says that Mr. Hudson brought some new energy in the studio and quoted John as saying he gave the band a “musical face lift”.  It wasn’t made clear as to whether he was continuing to work with the band or if he was just doing those two songs .  What WAS made clear is that the songs he was working on with the band were both brand new in addition to the breadth of material they already have written, and they do not know what will actually be on the album yet.  As Roger put it, all of the songs are kind of fighting for placement on the team at this point.  At the end of the process,  they will sit down and decide what 9-12 songs belong on the album.  They try to keep an open mind throughout the process…which by the way Roger says they are 3/4 of the way through at the moment.

DD14: Personally, I cannot wait until I can start typing the name of the album. I know that’s a long way off, but it’ll be nice.  I have a feeling though that DD14 has earned it’s way into being the “forevermore” loving-moniker for this album by the fans.  In any case, Roger feels pretty sure that fans will have new music to hear by the end of the year.  He said that it would be finished by summer. I had a difficult time trying to decide if he meant one song, the writing for the album, or otherwise, but given that he believes they are 3/4 of the way through the process, I would have to assume that he means the writing and recording, but if someone wants to clarify that for me – feel free. I am not very privy to the process of mixing, but I gather that can take a very long time, which must be why Roger said “Obviously the album will not be out this year”, but they are really trying for early 2015.  I have to believe him, and hope we’ll have much more to talk about in the latter part of this year into 2015. Katy mentioned (and I thank her for this) that it’s been stone silence from DD in the studio.  She’s right, it definitely has, and Roger was quick to explain that right now, they’re in the mode of keeping their heads down, keeping focused, and working.  Again, I believe that, and have no doubt that is how it has to be in order for them to ever get this album finished. But, we’re human and can’t help but mention that we miss them.  Right?!?

The Reflex: Katy mentioned that they were working on something really cool for the fans to commemorate the anniversary of this album. I can only imagine…and chances are it’s being posted somewhere as I type this, because that’s typically how it all goes down.  Things happen when I’m not looking.  She asked Roger how it felt to be celebrating this anniversary.  Roger said that he’s gotten “used” to these anniversaries.  (Me too – although 30 years still feels like a really long time!) He said that he feels The Reflex is one of the most important songs they’ve released.  The album version didn’t “jump out” at them until Nile got hold of it and “turned it on its head” As I mentioned in my earlier blog from today, a good many fans look to this song as the one that turned them into Duranies.  I’m still wondering what DDHQ has cooked up for fans…

Fan Q&A:  (I tried to get names. I am probably misspelling them, and I apologize!!)

Michelle wanted to know if Roger has any hearing damage from playing drums all of these years.  Roger said that he was tested four or five years ago and was told that he had the same hearing as someone who has been through a war.  Roger takes this in stride, saying that it’s to be expected when you’re a rock musician, but that his hearing really isn’t too bad.

Christine asked about whether or not Roger contributes to lyrics or song titles at all.  He said that on this particular album there has been a lot of discussion amongst the four of them regarding titles and lyrics, but that Simon has taken the helm with the bulk of the writing on this one.

Athena asks about places that Roger hasn’t been on tour that he’d like to go, and Roger said he’d like to go to India, China and Israel.

Maia wanted to know if he’s used new technology on this album.  Roger said that he’s been using the brand new Roland TD40 kit a lot for this album and he seems to really like it.

Sam asked when Roger knew he’d made it as musician (pop star) and how it felt. He answered saying that at one time early on he and John went record shopping right after the release of Planet Earth and their appearance on Top of the Pops. Girls recognized them and they ended up having to run down New Street in Birmingham.  It was about that time that he’d been asked for an autograph for the first time, and he said that’s kind of about the time you start realizing that you’re famous.

Marilyn wanted to know if Roger would marry her to which Roger said that he would NOT say it depended on what she looked like but that it depended upon how she is, and that he liked her name.  But then Katy reminded him (good save, Katy!!) that yes, Roger is in fact already married.  “Oh, that’s right!!  Rewind…rewind!!”

Roger is lucky he is not my husband today…because he’d be getting a phone call.  😀

Lastly, what does Roger want for his birthday if he could have anything?  (I didn’t catch who asked this and I’m sorry!)  Roger said that he would like a brand new Aston Martin in dark grey.  Yes…because wouldn’t we all???   But he’s also going to the Maldives for a vacation for his birthday, and the only way you can get to the island is by sea plane (note to fans who might be thinking they can go find him there – I hope you are good swimmers!), which worries him a bit since he is not a fan of small airplanes.

He thanked everyone in advance for their good wishes, and was back in the studio within a flash.  Nice, short and sweet Katy Kafé.  No spoilers. No song titles…but we did hear a little bit about what’s going on in there, which is something!

Taste the Summer (vacation coming!)

This is my last “in person” post before my vacation. (and even this is being written on Tuesday midday)  I just realized last night that I will miss the Olympics in its entirety (our family vacation timing is IMPECCABLE), not to mention Duran Duran at the Mountain Winery and even in Costa Mesa.  That one is probably going to sting a bit because I live less than 20 minutes from there, and that’s in traffic.  Like I said – our timing?  Really, really bad.

All of that aside, I’m looking forward to the trip.  I really do feel as though I need a long breather in order to clear my head.  I don’t plan to check Facebook (much), I don’t plan to tweet (much), and I don’t plan to blog (no really, I don’t!!!).  What’s even more shocking is that while I’m gone, I don’t plan to listen to Duran Duran.  *gasp*  (It is true!)  Every now and then I take a Duran break.  While that might be sacrilege to most of you, I find that I need that break sometimes, if for no other reason to than to truly appreciate their music when I come back.  I think it is sometimes a matter of just keeping it all feeling fresh.  Right about now it is getting to the point where their music is becoming more about background noise (apologies to the band!) than it is about appreciating their art, so I know it’s time.

I hate to say it, but I would expect the band is getting to that point as well.  They still have a month of touring ahead, and I am hoping for some fantastic shows here in the states, but the road has been long and I’ll bet they are anticipating a wonderful break before they begin the process of writing and recording next year. While on one hand it is tough to imagine that we’ve nearly come to the end of an album cycle once again, I don’t think I’m alone when I say that for all the good this album has brought to the fan community (I think it has helped to breathe new life into a community that I felt was dwindling rapidly.), it was not without difficulty.  Of course as I type that, I’m also thinking that when I play All You Need is Now, it still feels new to me. (background noise-ish at times…but new background noise!)

By the time I get back, the band will already be halfway through their month of dates in the US.  When I leave to see the band in Biloxi, Atlanta, Durham and Portsmouth, it will be bittersweet.  I am looking forward to seeing them again and I welcome the hours that I’ll spend dancing and singing along like we’re old friends.  I’ll also be sad when it’s over, because I will know that it will be quite some time before we’re all together once again.

Breaks are good though.  They keep us all fresh, healthy and appreciative of one another.  So with that, I’m off to get ready for my own break.  I trust you all will be fine without me and in Amanda’s capable hands – and if you really miss me, you can find me on Facebook or Twitter, although I won’t be checking (much).  😀  (typed like the true social media addict I really am….)
