#DDAD19 Preview, Questions of the Day and more!

I am distracted this morning between having to pick up my niece at the airport, work related news and Duran Duran Appreciation Day. Normally, when I start to blog, I have a solid idea in mind along with a rough outline. Today, though, I’m sort of winging it. Maybe, I’ll address a number of random things.

Duran Duran Appreciation Day

It’s tomorrow! Is everyone ready? Did you read Rhonda’s blog yesterday? If not, it’s here. She gave you the scoop about our party details! I still have to go shopping for our drink suggestions. What about all of you? Again, if you don’t know, we are starting our online party at 1 pm Central or 11 am Pacific. We will tweet and post the YouTube playlist link in the morning. Then, of course, we will be live tweeting using the hashtag #DDAD19. It will be super fun to see how this goes with both Rhonda and I tweeting at the same time using the same Twitter handle. If nothing else, I fully expect Rhonda and myself to crack ourselves up and only ourselves. Cannot wait!!

How else are people going to celebrate besides partying with us? How many of you are wearing Duran Duran t-shirts, for example? I know that I plan to! I will be wearing it despite moving my niece into college in the morning. Maybe it will help to educate these youngsters about good music! I also noticed that Duran’s social media have encouraged people to change their profiles pictures to this:

I don’t know about the rest of you but I have seen a lot of people change to this picture on both Facebook and Twitter. It makes me feel really good to see all of the love for Duran out there. If you haven’t changed yours yet, there is still time.

On a related note, I asked the following question on Facebook and Twitter: What Duran Duran lyric describes what you appreciate about the band? If you haven’t answered yet, I would love to know what you all have to say. After all, while I can certainly write about what I love about the band but I’m just one fan who might miss a lot about what others appreciate.

The Best 9 Songs

Speaking of social media, I wanted to take a minute to address the questions of the day. The set of questions we are on have to do with picking out the best 9 songs from a particular era This idea came from a thought I had when thinking about Duran albums. It seemed to me that the first three albums were so solid because they only included 9 songs. The band might have worked on other songs but only included the top ones, the best ones. So, what if we did that with the rest of the albums? Then, I decided that I shouldn’t be the one to determine which songs are the best but let our voters decide. Now, here is where I need to add the frequently stated disclaimer. When I do questions of the day like this, it doesn’t mean that I think that Duran Duran songs are bad or that some of them are bad. It is just that some might be better.

The second part of the disclaimer goes like this: It is just for fun! There is a lot of serious, horrible things going on in the world. I do things like the questions of the day to escape a little of that seriousness. I want one thing that is not so serious. It really doesn’t matter which songs our voters choose to be included in the best of Astronaut. No one gets hurts. The band does not get hurt by this. In real life, in the real world, lots of people are getting hurt. That is not happening with our questions of the day. Now, all that said, if you don’t like what we are asking, okay. Cool. Feel free to not participate or to participate. We love to have people voice their opinions but I get that for some people, it just doesn’t work for them.

On that note, I probably should get this published and get to the store. I have supplies to buy including some mixers and snacks. Anyone know any fun Duran related snacks? “See” you all tomorrow!!

Less Is More

I like doing the questions of the day. Sometimes, I struggle to think of topics or questions to ask but for the most part, it is all good. What is the best part about it? No, it isn’t that it doesn’t take long to do. It is more about how it teaches me something about the Duran Duran fan community. I have learned a lot about what Duranies generally love, like and do not enjoy. After years of doing these questions and other assignments, I can pretty accurately predict what fans are going to say about various Duran related topics. For example, I know that fans love Rio more than they love Pop Trash. If they want to listen to a side project, Arcadia is more likely to be chosen over TV Mania. Sometimes, though, the questions help me learn something about Duran Duran. This most recent set of questions is definitely a situation in which I came to some conclusion about Duran’s music that I hadn’t before.

If you are not aware, I have been trying to determine the favorite first track, second track, etc. as I first put up the first song on each album against each other before moving to the second song and so on. I am just about done with this set of questions as most tracks have been picked. The only ones I have left are the songs are the very end of the albums, usually the bonus or extra tracks. As I recognize this, I have to acknowledge that albums are released differently now. In the past, there were no bonus or extra tracks placed on albums. Instead, they would be released as b-sides to singles. Now, we don’t have singles that are released that require an A side with the single itself and a B side that is usually something new.

As I started to look at the results, I began to think about quality over quantity. If you ask fans about which albums they generally like best, they would choose the first three. So, what’s the difference between those first three albums and the most recent ones? Yes, obviously, there are very different, musically. Andy was around then, too. That said, I wonder if we don’t think that those albums are so awesome because they only had 9 tracks. I think a lot of Duranies would say each and every track is awesome. They chose nine amazing tracks for those albums. Now, an album might have 14 to 17 tracks, depending on which deluxe edition you purchase. Are all 14 or 17 tracks amazing? I think many fans would say no. It isn’t that they don’t love the most recent albums. It is more like they love the general feel or adore most of the tracks. But would the albums be improved if they only released the best 9 and then shared the rest later in other means?

Now, of course, I’m aware that there are some fans who are swearing at me as they are reading this. There are some fans who think that each and every track is amazing and are horrified that I dared to suggest that some songs might not be as good as others. Yet, I would still argue that even if you believe that they are all great, some are even more amazing than others. Other fans can acknowledge that Duran pushes themselves to try new things and to ensure that their songs are not just cookie cutter songs. Personally, I love that they do that but I think sometimes they miss the top mark. Yet, of course, when they hit it, they really hit it. There is no one better.

So, here is what I suggest. I would like us, the fans, to pick the best 9 songs from each album. The next set of questions will be just that. I will include every album track as well as every b-side and extra track to begin with. Then, each day we will get rid of one song. Again, this won’t be us determining that some songs are bad…just that they are not great album tracks. They would be better as extra tracks or b-sides. Personally, I look forward to seeing what the fans do with this set of questions!

Faster Than Light: Duran Fans and the Question of the Day

I have been a part of the Duran Duran fandom for years.  For many of those years, I also spent a lot of time watching, observing and thinking about our fan community.  What do we think?  What are we passionate about?  What kinds of activities do we like?  How do we like to express our fandom?  Sometimes, I think I’m starting to figure out our community and other times…I am not sure that I have a clue.

A couple of weeks ago, I started a new set of questions of the day.  I thought it might be fun to watch a different interview each day and then score it.  When the idea came up, it seemed like others were on board.  Initially, we had a bunch of people participate in those polls.  Interestingly enough, I started the interviews from 1981, then 1982, 1983, etc. moving closer and closer to the present.  As we have moved through the 1980s interviews and onto the 1990s interviews, I noticed that we are getting less and less participation.  This makes me sad.  I always hope that the question of the day is just something that people look forward to daily and get them thinking at least for a few minutes about Duran.  Yet, it doesn’t seem like that is the case.

Of course, the social scientist in me has thought about why this might be the case.  Is that people don’t have time to watch an interview each day?  That could be.  I know that I can relate.  My job takes a lot of my time and I continue to be involved in political affairs.  If I didn’t take the time in the morning, I wouldn’t have it.  Is it about when the interviews are from?  The 1980s interviews got a lot more participation.  Why is that?  Could it be these interviews weren’t ever seen before but the more result ones have been?  Could it be that the 1980s is simply a time period in Duran history that is more loved?  What about a combination of both or all of the above?  I think all of those are possibilities.  No matter the reason for the lack of participation, the question now is what to do.

First, I think I will at least finish one round of these questions, meaning that I will share some interviews until we get to the most recent interview.  After that, I think we need to change the question of the day to something that requires less time.  I think it might be fun to ask a set of questions that we did before but have not done for years.  That said, I want to know what you all think.  So, I put a little survey together.  Which question should I go with?

I appreciate everyone’s vote!  It will definitely help me to make the question of the day the most fun possible!

Duran Song Title Themes

Are you someone who pays attention to our questions of the day?  If you are, you know that generally they are poll questions.  They are quick, easy opinion questions.  The goal is just to keep people thinking of Duran each and every day.  Plus, I find it fun to think about which songs or videos I like better and figure that others might, too.

Last weekend, we finished ranking the albums and I blogged about the results yesterday.  Then, I started asking about what might seem to be random songs.  Perhaps, some of you have figured out the connection between the songs I have asked about.  First, I asked about Astronaut or Big Bang Generation.  Then, Faster Than Light went up against Last Day on Earth.  I put these songs into the space, astronomy related Duran songs.  The complete list of those is as follows:

  • Astronaut
  • Big Bang Generation
  • Faster Than Light
  • Last Day on Earth
  • Mars Meets Venus
  • Midnight Sun
  • New Moon on Monday
  • Northern Lights
  • Planet Earth
  • Planet Roaring
  • The Sun Doesn’t Shine Forever
  • Sunrise
  • Too Close to the Sun
  • The Universe Alone

I grouped other Duran songs together in themes as well.  The other topics I found included violence, nature, weather, animals, places, religion, science and the calendar/time.  Could I have come up with more?  I’m certain that I could have.  Heck, many songs could be placed in multiple categories.  I am also concerned that I am forgetting songs.  Here is where I need your help.  I need you to send me titles of songs I missed.  First, let me share the lists I have so far.

Violence:

  • A View to a Kill
  • Of Crime and Passion
  • Red Carpet Massacre
  • Sin of the City
  • You Kill Me with Silence

  • All Along the Water
  • Burning the Ground
  • Land
  • Night Boat
  • Skin Divers
  • The Valley
  • To the Shore

  • Salt in the Rainbow
  • Sound of Thunder

Animals:

  • Butterfly Girl
  • Hungry Like the Wolf
  • The Man Who Stole a Leopard
  • Palomino
  • Tiger Tiger
  • Union of the Snake

Places:

  • The Edge of America
  • Lake Shore Driving
  • Mediterranea
  • My Antarctica
  • Rio
  • Tel Aviv

Religion

  • Faith in This Colour
  • God
  • Like an Angel
  • New Religion
  • Paper Gods
  • Save a Prayer

Science

  • American Science
  • Blame the Machines
  • Breath After Breath
  • Lady Xanax
  • Networker Nation
  • Playing with Uraninum
  • Vertigo
  • Virus

Calendar/Time

  • Early Summer Nerves
  • Finest Hour
  • Secret Oktober
  • Taste the Summer
  • Valentine Stones
  • Violence of Summer
  • Winter Marches On

My questions now are simple.  What categories or themes did I leave out?  What did I miss?  Then, which songs did I miss or should I include that I didn’t?  I decided to stick with the titles of songs but should I include lyrics as well?  What do you think would be most fun?

Daily Questions Update

Don’t be scared!  The daily questions aren’t going away!  On the contrary, I’m always thinking of new questions that can be asked and I always look forward to the results.  At times, the results are totally predictable and other times…not so much.  Anyway, I want to stop, take a second from the chaos of the end of the school year to update all of you on where we are at with this series of daily questions/polls and what is coming up next!

Ultimate Album

We are getting to the end of the ultimate album questioning.  We are finishing track 10 now and will go through track 13.  Now, in order to truly ensure that we (the fans) have picked the ultimate album in the right fashion, we are also going to go back through each track and ask again but in a different way.  The second time around we are going to list all of the track ones together in a  single poll.  You, the voter, will have to just choose the favorite first track.  Then, the next day, you will get all of the second tracks to choose from.  At that point, we know that each and every voter will consider not only the favorite second track but also what would go best to follow the one(s) chosen before.  After we do this for all 13 tracks, we can be certain that we have, indeed, the ultimate Duran Duran album as chosen by the fans!

Sharing of the Ultimate Album

Once we have the definite ultimate album, we will put together a playlist via YouTube so that you all can listen to that album!!  Of course, Rhonda and I will put together our personal ultimate albums since we just might be different than the overall fan base (shocking, I know!).  Those will go on YouTube, too.  Likewise, we would love, love, love to have your ultimate albums, too!  It would really interest me what you all come up!  You will be welcome to share just your album/track listings but if you also want to share why you chose those tracks, we would love that, too!

What’s Next:  Duos!

After the ultimate album, we will turn back to pictures.  If you have been reading or following us for awhile, you might be asking yourself this question:  “What?  Didn’t we do pictures already?”  We did.  Earlier, we found everyone’s favorite picture of each individual band member then we compared favorite pictures to get a final favorite picture of an individual member.  (It was a picture of John from 1982, if you don’t remember!)  Anyway, it is time to expand beyond the individual member.  We will be moving on to favorite duos!  Perhaps, you prefer JoSi (John and Simon together!) or maybe DoJo (Dom and John!) is your thing! NiSi (Nick and Simon) might strike your fancy or, perhaps, RoJo works for you!  Here is what we need.  Like with the individual band members, we need you to send your favorite pictures of your two band members!  Last time, with individual members, we asked you to save just your FIVE favorites.  This time, because there are two members per picture, please send your TEN favorite pictures!  Where/how should you send them?  Simple.  Send them in one of three ways:  By email (dailyduranie@gmail.com), by private message on Facebook or via direct message on Twitter.  The key is to send them in a way that others can’t see what you send.  I don’t have a deadline for the last day you can send the pictures yet, but once I do, I’ll let you all know!  Assume that the deadline will be around the end of the twelve track. I, for one, know that you all will send fabulous pictures!  I can’t wait to see them!

Now, on that note, today’s question is a close one!  Only one vote separates the choices!
