Daily Duranie Review – Duran Duran Calendar

I have spent a lot of time this week running to and from post offices and intensely watching tracking information on packages shipped.  ‘Tis the season.  One of the packages I have been watching for was the 2015 Duran Duran calendar that I knew had been shipped due to a appreciated email from the DD webstore.  I have already admitted in previous blogs that I do tend to collect a lot of Duran Duran merchandise.  I am not a complete collector, though.  I know that there are people out there who collect every piece of vinyl or every poster or every tour book, etc.  I admire those people, but I tend to buy a bunch of random stuff, including the calendars, most years.  I am not sure why I still choose to buy the calendar.  I have my own calendar that I make and love.  Still…I have a hard time resisting.  So what do I think of this year’s?  Was it worth it?

2015 calendar cover

The 2015 calendar maintains a lot of the elements of the calendar that we know and love.  For example, the calendar is large (about the size of a vinyl album) and the quality is fabulous with sturdy, glossy pictures.  As always, the band members’ birthdays are listed.  I gotta ask, though…why not include Dom’s birthday?  Of course, I could say that about Dom, in general, but I’m getting ahead of myself.  The other thing I do like about the calendar is the use of the gold font and the latest DD logo.  I like that the gold logo is on every month in the corner of a black header.  Yet, the one thing I do wonder is why the header has to be so large.  There is a lot of empty black at the top of the page.  That said, most people, most Duranies are really only concerned with the picture part of the calendar.

How are the pictures?  One thing I should say before I run through the months is that the focus is studio pictures while the band works on DD14.  The extra picture in the front is mostly equipment used with a small picture of the group working on the album that we saw so much on social media, earlier this year.  You know the one I’m talking about–the one with Nile Rodgers, Mark Ronson, Mr. Hudson, etc.  I like that picture but wish that it had been a bit bigger.  January is Simon and the pictures of him are good ones.  In fact, I would say that he looks focused.  That said, like the first picture, this one’s main focus is equipment.  February’s focus is Nick and is very similar to Simon’s in that Nick looks good and seems very focused.  John has March and unlike the first two months, one of the pictures features a smiling John.  I’m definitely not complaining about that one!  Why couldn’t that picture have been bigger, though?!?  April is owned by Roger, no surprise there.  This is the first month that the picture of the actual band member is the visual focus.  I much prefer that.  May has more of Simon and I find this month disappointing.  The pictures are harder to see.  Nick is the focus of June.  At this point, I have to ask.  Does Nick always have June?  It sure feels that way.  I know that his birthday is in June, but so is John’s.  Can’t he have his birthday month every once in awhile?!  Anyway, I really like this one as the main picture is a cool shot of Nick.  July has more smiling John!  Yay!  The visual focus there is a shot of his hand playing bass.  While I would have preferred a cool shot like the one of Nick, this is good, too.  August is Roger’s and more like June with the focus being a big picture of Roger but it isn’t as cool as Nick’s.  September is a close up shot of Simon, which is nice but I have to ask.  Why is Simon on September and not in October?  That’s weird.  As for that October, it is a nice, clear picture of Nick.  I preferred the artistic June one, though.  How is November?  I’m not gonna lie.  It is my favorite.  There is a fabulous picture of John Taylor.  Every once in awhile, my inner fangirl comes out.  The year ends with Roger and it has a silly Roger picture and a more artistic one.

So, what do I think, overall?  There are a number of times that I wish there was less focus on equipment and more on the band.  I liked some of the artistic photos the best.  There was only one month that I found really disappointing and that was the one of Simon.  Likewise, I wish that they would just embrace Dom and include him in the calendar.  So, looking at some of the strange choices and the lack of Dom, was it worth it?  As a John fan, I have to say that November almost makes it worth it by itself!  Is it the best calendar ever?  Probably not but it is pretty good considering that the photos weren’t from photo shoots or live shows, but instead were from the studio.

Was it worth the purchase then?  I would say that I’m happy that I bought it but wouldn’t have been too upset if I hadn’t bought it.  What do you think?  Did you buy it?  Do you think it was a good purchase?

Duran Duran News – 11/17 to 11/30

It has been two weeks since I posted a summary of what has been happening in Duranland.  I didn’t do it last week as I was busy with some out-of-state guests.  (waves at Rhonda)  Anyway, I thought I would take time this weekend to catch us all up by compiling any and all Duran Duran news in one spot!

Dom Brown Anniversary

Did you know that Dom Brown has been with the band for 10 years?!  10!  Duranduran.com celebrated this fabulous anniversary by posting a note from Dom himself.  As a big fan of the guy, Rhonda, too, posted a little blog about this important occasion.  I, for one, love the last line of his note–here is to 10 more!

November’s Collector’s Corner

This month focused on the album, Notorious.  I never knew that there were subtle differences in how the album looked in various countries or what all of the remixes for this album are.  Yet, you can find all of that information and more over on the duranduran.com’s post.  Fascinating stuff!  It definitely makes me want to be more of a collector!

A View to a Kill Extended Mix

Did you know that there was an extended mix of this song?  Apparently, there is and it just recently surfaced!  See the post on duranduran.com to read John’s quote about it and to click on the link to hear.  After that, tell us what you think about it!

Duran Shopping

‘Tis the season for a little shopping!  Duran Duran has a new calendar out this year with the focus being studio pictures.  Buy it now here and read Rhonda’s thoughts about it here.  Perhaps, you want to support a little blog you know (and hopefully love!) by shopping at our Cafe Press store.

 Patty Palazzo

If you are a paid member of DDM, I highly recommend logging in and checking out the interview with Patty Palazzo.  You can learn a lot about her history on the Duran team as well as her own designs with Punk Masters!  I look forward to seeing her new line, which is to be released in December!  After you finishing this interview, check out Rhonda’s interview of her and Lori Majewski here!

 Band Members:  Out and About

Nick and his girlfriend, Nefer, attended the Guy Bourdin image maker exhibit at the Somerset House in London last week.  Check out Duran’s Facebook page for a picture of them!

Kingdom

Have you heard the song, “Kingdom,” by Charli XCX featuring Simon Le Bon yet?  If not, it has been released and getting lots of press.  BostonHerald.com covered it here.  The Examiner covered it, too!  Empty Light House reviewed it as well!  If that wasn’t enough, ABC Radio News wrote about it, too!  Look for our thoughts about it soon!

Band-Aid Anniversary

Can you believe that Duran Duran and other pop stars met thirty years ago to record the song, Do They Know It’s Christmas?  I try not to think about it too much as it makes me feel very old!  Nonetheless, there has been lots of press about it.  I recommend starting with Rhonda’s blog about it.   Then, you definitely should read the behind-the-scenes article by Mad World author, Lori Majewski!  After that, you can check out the article on Be80s here.  Heck, even Huffington Post UK covered it here!

Gallery Update

Duranduran.com updated the band’s gallery to feature the band’s performance for the Teenage Cancer Trust benefit.

Nick’s Beauty Side Project

Nick’s latest project, Geneu, an anti-aging product was featured in the latest issue of Wallpaper Magazine!  Need a refresher about this project of Nick’s?  Check out the press release on the band’s official site.

That’s all I could find on official sites.  Did I miss something?  I am confident that I have.  If so, comment about it so that the information is included!  Thanks!

This Week in Duranland – November 10 to November 16, 2014

I figured that this week in Duranland might be kind of quiet since they had their big public appearances last week.  Yet, it turns out that the week was plenty busy!  Did you catch everything?  Did I?  Read on to find out!  As always, I checked their official website, their official fan community website and their social media.

“Soul Boys of the Western World”
John Taylor wrote a couple of short notes this week on the band’s official website.  The first note was about this documentary, which is about Spandau Ballet.  In the note, John raves about the documentary and encourages everyone to see it.  I would think that any Duran fan would be interested since they were their “rivals” of sorts and could enlighten people about the music and fashion of the early days of both bands in the UK.

Teenage Cancer Trust
The band did perform this week!  Many of us were wondering if there was a show somewhere as Simon had tweeted about Movember and about how he can’t have one on stage but can shave everything else after the 15th, which indicated that there was a show in the works.  While it wasn’t a public appearance, they played in London for a fundraiser.  I love that the band wants to give their time and energy to causes like this one.  Read John’s complete note about it and see a picture here.

November Katy Kafe!
I’m sure I’m not the only one who looks forward to these each and every month!  I, especially, can’t wait if it means getting a scoop and we definitely got one this month!  Rhonda covered it all in her post earlier in the week!

Kingdom!
The song by Charli XCX featuring Simon is out tomorrow!  What does everyone think of it?!  I have to admit that I’m pretty excited about being able to buy new music featuring anyone connected to Duran!

Unstaged
The live performance directed by David Lynch played yesterday in Portugal at a film festival.  Read about it here.

More Anniversaries!
This week saw the 7th anniversary for Red Carpet Massacre and the 30th anniversary of Arena that Rhonda discussed here!

2015 Calendar!!!
As Rhonda talked about here, the Duran Duran calendar for 2015 will be available on November 27th!  I have to admit that I’m looking forward to this one!

Okay, Duranies, what did I miss?!

New DD Calendar for 2015!

I wasn’t at all surprised to see that Duran Duran was releasing another calendar for 2015, but I was pleasantly surprised to see the photos were going to be recent, shots taken while recording #DD14 in the studio.

Last year, I was openly critical of the calendar because I felt it did a disservice to the band in their current form. Don’t get me wrong, the 80s were lovely in nearly every way, but it’s now 2014. For a band that prides themselves on not being nostalgic, why bother? Sure, we could certainly point to Careless Memories, the yet-to-be-released photo book that Denis O’Regan has been working on, and say that provided the motivation, but given that Andy was artfully removed (cropped) from every shot, overall it felt like a big attempt to reach back than a true step forward. Some might say that my comments were unsupportive of a band I claim to love. I would say that my comments are a doseof reality – whether that dosage is positive, negative or neutral. People read our blog because we’re truthful.  Being supportive does not mean being just another “yes person”. It means being honest and giving real feedback. We have always said that if the band REALLY wants to know what fans think, then they should read our blog, and we continue to stand by that assertion.

This year, however, is a different story. I am cheering for the use of recent photos. 2014 was a year spent in the studio, and it’s great to see that time documented. No, the pictures may not end up being as flashy as the #duranlive photos we’ve all grown to love, they’re real-life moments during the rigors of recording an album. How can we not love that?? Granted, the more selfish, insistent part of me wonders what pictures will show up on the calendar….but today I’m settling on being happy a 2015 calendar with recent photos will be coming out. Who would have ever thought in 1985 that I’d still be hanging Duran on my wall?? I’ll be buying one for sure!

Duran Duran announced the calendar on their Facebook account this morning, and it will be available to order from their web shop on November 27th…. If you’re in the US and  waiting for your turkey to finish roasting that day (it is the US Thanksgiving holiday on 11/27), you’ll have time to order!!  DDHQ also mentioned that maybe we’ll be getting a sneak peak beforehand – and if that happens, you can count on seeing a blog about it here!
