What Duran Duran Fans Appreciate: Part 3

Today, we finish our celebration of Duran Duran Appreciation Day by looking at the responses Duranies had for the last 10 questions of our month long “challenge”.  This challenge was designed to be fun with fans answering a question that was posed each day.  Thankfully, we had tons of participants so it was especially fun!  Now, onto the results:

Favorite Band Member:

I won’t lie.  There is a part of me that is always interested to see what the response to this question is going to be.  It seems to me that some fans have stuck with the favorite that they have had since they were kids.  Others change over time.  Almost every band member got chosen as a favorite with the exceptions of Warren and Sterling.  Andy and Dom were chosen as favorite band members.  The most popular member, according to our survey, matched my choice:  John Taylor!

Rhonda’s favorite, of course, is Dom Brown!

Favorite Picture of Favorite Band Member:

I expected this question to be tough.  It is super hard to pick a favorite picture!  I know!  Lots of people sent fabulous photos that I enjoyed looking at.  For me, I chose this picture:

Rhonda chose this one!

Favorite Album:

Again, I think this question is tough, too!  For me, I just pick the album based on the overall feel of it.  I try hard not to think about all of the individual songs or else I am unable to decide.  12 different albums were given as answers.  Some more popular ones were All You Need Is Now, Paper Gods, and Seven and the Ragged Tiger.  The most popular answer was, indeed, Rio.

Rhonda and I chose the first album.  Sometimes, I think we need a brain separation!

Favorite Show of the Paper Gods Tour (or one wished you could attend!):

This question had almost 60 responses.  The cool part of this question was how often people shared why the show was their favorite.  Some shows were mentioned by multiple people, including the Chicago shows, Birmingham, San Francisco, Hollywood Bowl, Massachusetts, and Atlanta.  The most popular show was the one at Red Rocks in Colorado.

Our favorite show was at Agua Caliente on March 18, 2017.

Song That Should Not Have Made It to an Album:

40 different songs were given as answers!  I just love how varied our fan community is as many of the songs mentioned are ones that others love.  Some songs mentioned frequently were Bedroom Toys, Shotgun, 911 Is a Joke, and Electric Barbarella.  The most popular answer, though, was Hothead.

Rhonda’s pick was a recent one with Danceophobia:

I chose Zoom In as no song should ever be written about Second Life.

Favorite Demo:

10 different demos were given as answers to this one.  I thought it was cool that A Matter of Fact was given as an answer by so many.  If you don’t know it, here it is:

The most popular choice, though, was Beautiful Colours:

Rhonda and I chose Salt in the Rainbow.  (Yes, we had the same answer.  Again.  The world should be afraid.)

Most Underrated Song:

This question resulted in a lot of different answers as well.  In fact, there were 52 songs that were given as answers!  Some popular answers were Nice, Someone Else Not Me, The Man Who Stole a Leopard, and Serious.  A lot of people thought Do You Believe in Shame was the most underrated Duran song.

I picked Before the Rain.

I liked Rhonda’s pick, too, which was Red Carpet Massacre.

The Song That Should Have Been a Single:

This question got a lot of responses, too.  Frequent answers included Last Chance on the Stairway, New Religion, The Man Who Stole a Leopard and more.  The most popular answer was mine, too, in Hold Back the Rain.

Rhonda picked the song, Virus.

Favorite Video:

I swear almost all Duran’s videos were given as responses.  A lot of people like Planet Earth, The Reflex, Wild Boys, Night Boat and Girls on Film.  Save a Prayer was this year’s favorite.

Rhonda chose Is There Something I Should Know

My favorite is New Moon on Monday!

Favorite Song:

We finished up the challenge by asking about people’s favorite song. Again, there were a ton of answers to this.  Some popular ones were Save a Prayer, Careless Memories, Ordinary World and lots more.  While Save a Prayer took the most votes, New Religion was mentioned by a lot of people.

Rhonda likes the great Is There Something I Should Know!

My favorite, which I believe is known by many, is Planet Earth.  (A great song live!)

That’s it.  On that note, we close the book on this year’s Duran Duran Appreciation Day.  We want to thank each person who participated, whether s/he/they gave one answer or all 30.  I know that we had fun and we hope that you did, too.

What Duran Duran Fans Appreciate: Part 2

How did you celebrate Duran Duran Appreciation Day this year?  We have been celebrating since mid-July when we asked people various questions about their opinions about Duran Duran.  Since we are not ready to let DD Appreciation Day go, we thought it would be fun to discuss the results.  Yesterday, we tackled the first ten questions and looked at people’s answers.  Today, I will summarize what Duran Duran fans said about the next ten.

Video You Forget About but Love:

First of all, some people wondered what we meant by this question.  We realize that it is impossible to forget about any Duran video but there are some videos that immediately come to mind.  The goal was to have people think beyond those ones to the rest of Duran’s videos.  There were a lot of videos given as answers, including Lonely in Your Nightmare, Do You Believe in Shame, and Out of my Mind.  The most popular choice matched mine with Night Boat.

Rhonda had a great choice in Falling Down:

Favorite DVD:

This question went similarly to favorite side project in that one answer dominated.  Beyond that big winner, some popular answers were Live from London, Three to Get Ready and Arena.  The top response, though, not surprisingly was Sing Blue Silver.

While we love Sing Blue Silver, we chose A Diamond in the Mind as we adore their live performances.

Favorite Possession:

This question was tough to record the responses as many of them were so personal.  What I did then was to put responses into large categories.  A lot of fans mentioned things like drumsticks or guitar picks.  Others mentions specific t-shirts, books or vinyl records.  Many people shared stories or pictures about meeting the band.  The most common response was having something autographed.  Rhonda’s response was her memories, which many others mentioned as well.  I chose a book that I put together with my sister, an oral historian, about the first 10 years of touring with Rhonda.

Least Favorite Song to Hear Live:

To clarify, the song that is your least favorite to hear live does not mean that you don’t like it.  It means that you like others more.  Likewise, it doesn’t make you a “bad fan” if you like some songs more than others.  Anyways, there were 31 different songs given as a response to this question.  Some of the most popular were White Lines, Danceophobia, and Save a Prayer.  The most popular answer was Hungry Like the Wolf.

Rhonda chose another standard in the set list:  A View to a Kill

My answer is one that I have stated many times before:  Come Undone.

Favorite Song Never Heard Live:

This question resulted in the most number of responses!  68 different songs were given as answers.  Some songs were obviously given multiple times including Last Chance on the Stairway, Secret Oktober and the Seventh Stranger.  The most popular answer:  Hold Back the Rain.  Based on this and the audience’s response to this song during the summer, I recommend that they keep playing it.

Rhonda and I chose Late Bar.  If the band wants to bust that out, we would be pretty dang excited!

Most Recent Concert:

I found the responses to this question to be very interesting.  I suspect that the answers show a lot about who reads and participates in our surveys.  A lot of people chose 2015 and 2016.  Some said 2012 or 2008, but the majority of the people stated that their most recent concert was in 2017.  Our answer was the same.

First Concert:

I loved reading the range of responses for this question as they ranged from 1980 to 2017.  A lot of people said 2005 or 1984.  The most common response was 1987.

Rhonda’s first concert was in 1989.

I saw my first Duran concert in 1993.

Favorite B-Side/Bonus Track:

There were 22 different answers for this question, which is more than I expected.  They varied throughout Duran’s career from the first b-side to bonus tracks from Paper Gods.  Some common answers were Khanada, Like an Angel, I Believe/All I Need to Know, Late Bar and Planet Roaring. The most common response matched our answer:  Secret Oktober.

Least Favorite Video:

Again, many different videos were given as answers.  Some of the most common were Last Night in the City, I Don’t Want Your Love, Girls on Film and more.  The most common choice was my answer in Electric Barbarella.

Rhonda’s choice was also a frequent answer:  All She Wants Is.

Least Favorite Album:

Many people pointed out that even on one’s least favorite album, there are still songs that are really liked.  This is a fair point.  Some albums were not mentioned at all.  Others were mentioned a lot like Medazzaland, Liberty, Thank You, and Red Carpet Massacre.  The most popular response as well as our answer was Pop Trash.

Did anything surprise you in the responses to questions 11-20?  Tomorrow, I’ll finish sharing the results for the last 10 questions.

What Duran Duran Fans Appreciate: Part 1

What a Duran Duran Appreciation Day!  I, for one, had a lot of fun hosting an online party that lasted about 7 hours!  I know that not everyone could make it when we had it due to work, time zones, etc., which was a big bummer as we would like everyone to be able to participate.  That said, I want to thank everyone who did come party with us whether it was for a short time or the whole time.  You all made our day a lot more fun!  Of course, I also appreciated that the band sent little messages out to the fans and that they posted these cool 360 degrees virtual reality videos of Paper Gods and Hungry Like the Wolf from Oakland.  All of that being said, I’m not really ready to be done with this year’s Duran Duran Appreciation Day.  Nope.  I want to milk it for as long as I can.  Of course, we sorta have been doing that for the last month with our Daily Duranie challenge.  So, what did the fans appreciate, according to our survey questions?  What did we appreciate?  This weekend, I’m going to tackle exactly that as I tallied the responses to find out if there are some songs, videos, etc. that many fans appreciate.  I will also share what Rhonda and I appreciate.

Song That People Never Tire Hearing Live:

Interestingly enough, I only saw 26 different songs mentioned here.  Some of the most popular were:  Rio, Save a Prayer, White Lines, Wild Boys, The Chauffeur, Planet Earth, and New Religion.  The song that most fans chose, which also happened to be mine as well was Careless Memories:

Rhonda chose Rio!

Favorite Side Project:

The vast majority of fans, including Rhonda, chose Arcadia.  I don’t think that anyone is too surprised by that.

I was the different one on this question with John Taylor.  (I’m sure that everyone knew I would answer that way, right?)

Favorite Side or Solo Project Song:

Since Arcadia was the favorite side project, it makes total sense that the favorite song  was one of theirs.  Indeed, it was Goodbye Is Forever.  That said, there were 28 different songs mentioned.  Duranies have varied taste!

Rhonda chose Dom Brown’s song, Amazing.  It is a good one so if you haven’t heard it, go buy his music here!

I chose a John Taylor song (again–shocking, I know!).  I picked Fields of Eden, a personal favorite.

The Song that Describes You:

There were a lot of different songs given for this answer, 49 different songs, in fact!  I liked that some people would explain why they chose the song they did but I understand if people didn’t want to share.  This is a question I think would be cool to be asked every year to see how you change.  Anyways, we did have a few songs that were chosen multiple times, including Ordinary World, Butterfly Girl and My Own Way, which all tied with the same number of responses.

Rhonda chose the song, What Are the Chances:

I picked the song, Finest Hour.

Funny Video:

One thing that we appreciate about Duran is their sense of humor.  They don’t take themselves too seriously.  It is one of things Rhonda and I try to do here, which is make fun of ourselves.  About 20 different videos were given as answers, including A View to a Kill, Night Boat, New Moon on Monday, and more.  Apparently, a lot of fans think the band’s acting and dancing are pretty funny.  The most common response was Arcadia’s The Flame.

Rhonda and I chose Rio.  It is a video that too many people interpret as being about greed, materialism, and capitalism.  We are amused by that because to us it shows some dorky guys who couldn’t get the girl no matter what they had or did to impress her.

When People Became Fans:

I loved this question as people came on to proudly state when they officially declared their Duranie status.  The range of responses varied from 1978 (!) all the way until 2015.  Super cool!  The majority of fans claimed 1981 or 1982 as the big year for them.  Rhonda proudly stated 1981 as her year.  I, on the other hand, am a LOT younger so I could only say 1984.  😀

Favorite Picture of the Band:

Holy cow!  We got a LOT of different pictures for answers.  It was SO cool to see our social media filled with pictures of the band.  Many pictures went all the way back to their New Romantic days while others were recent ones.  So cool.  The most common picture, though,  was from a 1982 photo shoot and looked something like this:

While we loved that photo shoot, Rhonda and I chose something more modern.

Album Cover:

Questions like this make me laugh a little.  14 different album covers were given as answers.  Some of the answers were for album covers that other fans hate.  Variety is alive and well in our fandom.  The most popular choice:  Rio.

Rhonda and I preferred the album cover of Seven and the Ragged Tiger.  We liked the band picture along with the symbols and whatnot.

The Song/Video That Takes You Back to When You Became a Fan:

Again, this question produced a wide range of answers, depending on when people became fans.  Interestingly enough, the most popular answer was Planet Earth.

For Rhonda, the video for Hungry Like the Wolf really reminds her of when she first became a fan:

The Reflex is the video that truly pushed me into that Duranie category.

A Song That Always Makes You Smile:

This was another category that resulted in a lot of answers, 42 different songs, in fact!  Some of the most popular were (Come Up and See Me) Make Me Smile, Hold Back the Rain, Rio and lots more.  The most popular response was the one I gave:  Sunrise.

Rhonda chose the song that has been added into Sunrise during their live shows for the Paper Gods Tour, which is, of course, New Moon on Monday.

What do you think of the answers to the first ten questions?  Anything surprise you?  Tomorrow, then, we will pause on the remixes poll to continue to appreciate Duran by looking at questions 11-20 and the answers Duranies gave in response!

Happy Duran Duran Appreciation Day 2017!

Hi everyone!

This year, we decided to do something a little different. Rather than just do a video appreciating everyone from the band to the fans and beyond, we decided to address the band directly.  We wanted to thank and appreciate them for everything they’ve done.

That isn’t to say we don’t appreciate our fellow fans, but we felt like we should spend a little time thanking the people who are directly responsible!
