Happy Birthday, Mr. Brown!!!

June is a VERY special month for Duran Duran and for Duranies!  Why?  Simple.  We all celebrate 3 birthdays!  Yes, THREE!!!  First, we  celebrated Nick’s on the 8th.  Later, we will celebrate John’s on the 20th but today, we get to celebrate Dom Brown’s birthday!!!

This morning, Duran Duran’s official social media sites posted the following:  “Happy, happy birthday to the very talented Duran Duran guitarist Dom Brown Music ! He’s in tour rehearsals, hope he has time for cake!”  This message is music to my ears!  Of course, I hope he has time for cake but I love, love, love hearing that he is busy in tour rehearsals.  If you know this blog at all, then you know that we are fans of Dom.  We like Dom.  We are VERY glad that he is in the band.  Yes, I did say in the band.  He is to us.  Absolutely.  Always.  Therefore, we are super glad that we will be able to see him around during this upcoming tour!

So, how should we celebrate him?  Simple.  Let’s celebrate his work and the good times surrounding him!

Rhonda and I first saw Dom play in Chicago in March of 2005 when he will filling in for Andy.  Frankly, I don’t think I thought too much about him that night.  I was in front of John and was just super relieved that the show was still happening!  By the next year, however, we were open-minded enough to give him a shot when Andy left.  Despite still being on John’s side for that October 2006 show at the Sears Center in Chicago, both Rhonda and I took note of him and were impressed.  He just seemed to fit.  It wasn’t like pushing a square peg in a round hole.  No.  He just fit easily into the band and their live performance.  Thus, by the time I saw him singing backing vocals in Sunrise, I welcomed him to the band.  True story.

In fact, we welcomed him to the band in true Duranie fashion by holding up a sign for him at the next show in New Orleans at the Voodoo Music Festival.

oops...wrong sign. Well, we held this one up too!

What was particularly cute about this sign?  The fact that Simon and John saw it but Dom didn’t!  Yes, we are AWESOME!

By 2007, my status as a fan for Dom not only maintained but increased when I happened to see the DoJo.  As a John fan, I have always appreciated the JoSi (the times that John and Simon “interact” on stage).  By the Broadway shows, I not only had the JoSi to appreciate but the DoJo, too!!

Of course, we discovered that the DoJo could do magical things like not only making Rhonda tolerate Hungry Like the Wolf but even sort of…kind of…look forward to it live!  Imagine that!

Of course, Mr. Brown’s talents go beyond his musical experiences with Duran as he is just a great musician as seen by these solo live clips!

Of course, Dom is just a really great guy as well based on the fact that he was willing to sign cd inserts for us or wear a certain blog’s wristband as seen here!

On that note, we wish Dom the very happiest of birthdays!!!  We cannot wait to see you on the road, Mr. Brown!!!

How to Plan a Tour in 2 Hours or Less!

Let me paint the scene.  It is Wednesday afternoon.  I’m sitting at my desk at school, attempting to grade as many semester exams and essays as quickly as I can while adding report card comments and filling out some paperwork on a specific student.  To say that I was multi-tasking is probably a bit of an understatement.  At about 3:45, the student teacher I was working with came in to ask questions about how to grade the finals when I declared that I could not take one more thing.  I felt like screaming.  I had plans in the evening and grades were due in about 18 hours.  My plate was full.  Very full.  Then, at 3:55, I get a text message from a member of the Daily Duranie “reserves”, those friends of ours who would alert us if there is any Duran news worth noting.

As I debated about whether or not to check the phone, my colleague from across the hall called for me.  I remember  walking over to talk with her.  I know that we exchanged words.  What were those words about?  No clue.  I had a text message from a Duranie.  As I turned back to my room, I looked at my phone.  Before I could even get to a more private location, I found myself screaming very loudly and calling the band a VERY AFFECTIONATE name.  This name isn’t necessarily school appropriate however.  Nonetheless, since I was in the hall while I screamed this name, it is now on film since my school has cameras in the halls.  Perfect.  Just perfect.  I knew that my grading would now wait!  Why?  Simple.  I had a tour to plan and here’s how I did it in less than 2 hours!

Step One:  Grab the nearest calendar and put the dates in calendar form.  It doesn’t matter what kind of calendar but I recommend a monthly calendar.  Perhaps, I should have chosen wiser than to use the Holocaust Museum calendar that I have for work but whatever…

Step Two:  Look for shows that are close together in terms of dates and locations and eliminate the shows that aren’t.  For example, Denver would be super cool but the next concert after that is a few days away and would require an additional flight.  That won’t work!  I can’t be gone from work that long!!!

Step Three:  Look at the possible tour dates that are left.  From there, look at the details.  You want to hit the most number of shows possible within a short time (stupid work responsibilities get in the way again!).  You also want to pay attention to location.  Can we get to them without too much hassle?  How close are the shows, geographically?  Are the shows in cool locations?  Anything special to the show?  These things can all be determined relatively quickly.  Usually, one show immediately sticks out.  If so, build a tour around that.  For example, we build our UK Tour around the show in Birmingham.

Step Four:  Now, that the dates of choice have been picked, re-read the email about presale information and package information.  Consider your budget and your desire for good seats and figure out what kind of tickets to buy for next show(s) you are planning on attending.  The ticket types you buy may not all be the same for each show, if you are buying for multiple shows, especially now that there are different kind of packages involved with the fan presale.  Speaking of presale, it is a good time to check your schedule and determine what needs to be changed, if needed, in order for you to participate in presale.  Thankfully, the Duran Gods realized that I’m done with work for these upcoming presales.

Step Five:  Present the tour plan to your partner(s)-in-crime.  Be prepared to explain why you chose those shows and those ticket packages.  After your partner(s) agrees with the plan, set aside another time in order to make more specific plans like plane tickets, hotels, and whatever else is needed.

How long did all of this take?  I received the text message at 3:55.  Rhonda called me at 5:05.  We had the plan in place by 5:43 and had talked to other friends of ours about their plans, too.  If there is nothing else we have learned over the last 10 years or so, we have learned how to plan a tour quickly, very quickly.  Of course, while I think my method is solid, I would love to hear yours!  Maybe with tricks from you guys, we could have a plan for the next one in place within 90 minutes!

You Want Duran Duran Tour Dates?

There are some days when I honestly and truly should not leave the house, and yesterday…particularly the afternoon…was indeed one of those times.

If you haven’t heard yet, please allow Daily Duranie to be the first to break the news (to you)…

You should probably grab a beverage of choice and sit down. Trust me.

DURANLIVE IS COMING!!

I know, I know….you might need oxygen. I understand. You were expecting it…but at the same time you were starting to wonder if they were really going to do anything at all, and certainly nothing else besides festivals right??  Take a breath and know that we’re all probably feeling the same way right now.

Before I give the list of confirmed (yes, confirmed) of dates, I very much want to commend DDM. Not only did I receive the dates by email (not smoke signal, not listed on a variety of different social media, and not just haphazardly stuck up on a website without notice or fanfare), but they wanted to give them to fans first. Granted, you needed to be a member of DDM in order to get them last night before anyone else, but to be fair – people are PAYING for some exclusivity with that fan club. Getting an email with the dates listed seems fair. The email thanked us for being members, then explained that while these dates will not go on the public site until Monday (which means I suppose I’m giving a spoiler, and I really hope I don’t get into trouble for doing so, they are literally posted ALL OVER Facebook right now anyway), DDM wanted members to have them first in order to plan and even called it “their version of a leak”.  (Well DDM…now this is Daily Duranie’s version.)

The email was split into two sections, the first explaining the various ticket packages. As with previous tours, you can either buy straight pre-sale tickets, or go for one of the upgraded VIP packages, which have several different pricing levels. Keep in mind that not all VIP packages are available for all shows, and in certain markets and/or places, pre-sales might not even be available. Those are the breaks, and so pay close attention to what your particular show of interest offers. I really don’t want to see anyone complaining on social media that some show in Timbuktu doesn’t have a pre-sale or Platinum VIP and that DDM sucks just because someone didn’t bother to read closely.  Caveat Emptor (Let the Buyer Beware). DO YOUR HOMEWORK.

Bottom line: YES, VIP can be pricey. My advice? Choose wisely.  DDM is bringing back the infamous cocktail party (please, please, please let it be something more like the cocktail party in NYC for the fan show) …they seem to have some fantastic merchandise lined up, including the ever-popular tour laminates, AND….if you’re really into front row, Platinum guarantees just that…a front row seat. Additionally you’re getting one of the coolest offerings I’ve heard of in a long time – a tour of backstage. I think that is going to be fantastic! Again, kudos for DDM because they have obviously been reading…um, I mean listening….to the fans.  Well done, in my opinion!

If you’re not into the idea of a cocktail party but still want a great seat – Silver is the package for you because you’re still guaranteed a seat in rows 1-5.  I’d love some clarification for Bronze because it just says a premium reserved seat with no real indication of what that means. Is that a premium seat in the same row 1-5 or is that a “premium” seat in section 300 in row ZZ?  I’m not really sure, so if anyone knows, please let me know in the comments.

I know you’re all wondering about those pre-sales.  Well my friends, they are mostly on Monday, June 15, with the exception of the October 1 show at the Hollywood Bowl. That presale is on Monday June 22. So you’ve got the weekend to ponder, plot, and plan.  Please note that the band is going through Crowdsurge for their ticket sales, and you absolutely must create your Crowdsurge account PRIOR to Mondays sales. Don’t wait!! Good luck!!

Not only do I think they did a good job in giving us the dates first (I want to give HUGE applause for this even though I am well-aware that there are people complaining that they still haven’t received the email. My question is this: are those people really and truly CURRENT members – because the few that have come to me asking for them have been people who realized that they’d allowed their membership to lapse.), I have to take pause on the fact that these dates are nearly ALL on the west coast…which quite honestly blows my mind to pieces. I don’t know how, I don’t know why…I only know that I’m going to take full advantage.  (“Honey, I’m gonna be gone for a couple of weeks….hope you don’t mind…” as I sneak out the door in late September…)

Truth be told, when my friend Krista sent me a text message yesterday, I was in the middle of a final school meeting for my son. I heard my phone buzzing, and I just knew. I had to do major self-talking, as in: “you will NOT look at that phone, Rhonda. FOCUS. You are talking to Gavin’s teacher about his final grades. You are listening to Gavin talk about his year end projects…no, no, NO don’t think about Duran Duran right now. Do not even ponder over what could be going on. Just don’t!”  As Gavin’s teacher wrapped up the meeting, I scrambled for my phone. Ridiculous. I hadn’t even left the building and had my phone in hand. I took one look at her text and sent the following:

“am going to scream and quietly rock in a corner.”

As I’ve been going on and on all year – my oldest is about to graduate. Her graduation party is at my house on Saturday. Two days from now (as I nervously glance at my clock because I should be cleaning right this very second). I will have 70 confirmed guests in my backyard, most of them teenagers, but still plenty of family. I have about 5,000 things to do, none of which include this band. Until yesterday. So…I told Amanda to let me know what shows we’re doing…because that’s how much I trust her. I’m just thrilled that we’re planning something, and on Sunday, after the party is over…I can focus on Duran Duran.  YES!

I’ve already been asked if there will be Daily Duranie pre-parties and I think the answer is a resounding YES, when possible. We’d love to do them everywhere – but the fact is, Amanda and I are paying our own way, and both of us have “day” jobs. We are probably only doing three shows (out of these first initial dates), and where it is possible to meet up before or even after the show, we can certainly do that. We’ll have our own VIP cocktail party, rest assured! More info on those to come, so stay tuned!

Happy Weekend! I bid you farewell until Monday (assuming I’m still alive after this weekend’s graduation festivities!).
