Shake up the pitcher*, the lizard mixture: Planning for Durandemonium 2018

*Yes, I spelled the word incorrectly. ON PURPOSE. See what I did there?

It has been a couple of weeks since I gave any sort of an update on convention planning.

First of all, we are still moving forward with plans! If you haven’t already marked August 9-12 as Durandemonium 2018 on your calendar, you should! We have been emailing with our contact at the Hard Rock Cafe (shout out to Jason!), thus begins the number crunching portion of convention planning….stay tuned!

What I am looking for currently, however, are any ideas that past DD convention goers, planners, etc, might like to see and do in August.

Yes, we all know we’d like the band there. Maybe they should just do a Vegas show over the weekend of Durandemonium 2018. Problem solved! ūüėÄ

Note to all Duranies and anyone else out there: pretty sure there’s not a Vegas show anywhere on their 2018 calendar…but I just figured I’d throw it out there to anyone who may be reading. Can’t get anything if you don’t ASK. For that matter, I’d take any one or more of them,¬†including the touring band –¬†Dom, Anna, Erin, Simon W. or even their road team or someone who has worked with the band – to appear for an hour, take some questions, and do photos/sign stuff. (If I’m gonna ask, I’m going to go BIG.)

Oh and yes, we’re willing to pay. We’re not kidding. Email us. dailyduranie@gmail.com¬†

In all seriousness, what activities sound like fun for Durandemonium 2018? We’ve brainstormed about a vendor area for sales/trading, games and trivia, a video party similar to what we do online each year for DD Appreciation Day, perhaps even a guest panel. Is there anyone you’d like to see/hear from?¬†Do you have a burning desire to plan a specific activity? Talk to us! ¬†A Vegas show you’re dying to see? A specific video/interview/etc you want to see? Let us know! ¬†As exclusive as this invite-only event will be, we want it to be fun.

I’m also thinking about theme. We have a general idea that may or may not involve costumes. Who says DD fans can’t/don’t do cosplay?!? If you have any light bulb moments you want to share, we are open to ideas!

I don’t have specific information regarding ticket costs yet. Amanda and I just got some information from Hard Rock Cafe that we need to go through, and some figuring to do. We want to treat our guests to a weekend they’ll be still be talking about through the next tour, but that information is coming soon.

Amanda and I chose not to assemble a volunteer committee as early on this time because much of the decision-making comes down to the two of us. However, there will come a time when we are reaching out to those who are willing to be an integral part of the weekend.  That said, we are very open to hearing ideas, so fill our inbox!

Hoping to be posting concrete information very soon….

Happy New Year 2018!

I drove home yesterday morning from a wild weekend in Vegas. I’m always tired at the end of a weekend like that, but yesterday I was also stressed (I have been writing that word a LOT lately and I really hope that settles down some in 2018). ¬†But more on that later.

The weekend was fantastic. I saw friends, rocked out with a couple of different bands, and for a short time, forgot all about anything else and lived in the moment. I do have a list of people to thank and acknowledge, so bear with me. I know that we’ve already thanked these people but I’m doing it again because they deserve it!!

  • Thank you to Jason for offering up his Hard Rock Live to us for our Daily Duranie meet up. Above and beyond the call of duty in every single way. I don’t know how to return the favor. We can’t thank you and the management team enough for your kindness and hospitality. You made my whole weekend, and I’m not even kidding about that. (no offense Duran Duran, I’m getting to you…I promise!)
  • Thank you to Noelle Kahn for being a ROCKSTAR and jumping in to help Amanda and I out with selling raffle tickets that night. As we said in our video, logistics at these events are something we tend to forget about. If we’re busy selling raffle tickets and wristbands, it makes it very difficult for us to be good hosts. So thank you X 1000.
  • It was fantastic to meet Durandy for the very first time, and to see Kitty (Gimme A Wristband) again. They continue to inspire and remind me why I do this, even when sometimes I feel like none of it matters to anyone but me.
  • Lisa (I am being vague on purpose, but I hope your feet are doing better than they were on Saturday night when I last saw you!), both Amanda and I want to thank you for your kindness. ¬†I know you probably feel like what you and your friend gave us was just a little thing, but it was not. People will go nuts. However, what we really appreciate even more, are the words of support from both of you. It matters more than I can properly articulate.
  • Lori and Suzie, I adore you both. I’m glad you’re my people and I hope that continues for a very long time…. you get me and haven’t even stopped to have me committed yet. Thank you for just going along with my obsessive behavior and letting me figure it out for myself that it was going absolutely nowhere. It was a good fantasy while it lasted. ūüėÄ
  • I feel very lucky to have friends that have my best interests at heart. Those of you who “show up”…whether in person or from afar, matter so much to me. You’re there when I need you, and I just want to look you virtually in the eye, since I can’t always in person, and say thank you. I mean it. You all know who you are. The hugs, the chats, even the quick smiles and waves in passing helped me to de-stress.
  • So glad I got to meet so many friends, readers, and twitter pals!

So about that show. Yes, we were in the sixth row, and yes, they were great seats. Nothing I’m about to write should get in the way of that fact. Our distractions of not one but two near-fist fights in the aisle next to us, as well as the constant persistence of people trying to get closer to the stage and the sea of people in front of us who insisted on seeing the entire flipping show through their iPhone as opposed to just watching it with their own eyes definitely provided challenges to enjoying the show. ¬†And then there was the family of four – two parents and two very young children – behind me who were very upset when the concert started and everyone stood up. They left after the first two songs, and I felt bad because the wife clearly wanted to stay, but the husband was furious with Amanda and I because we stood up. I saw a lot of the show by peering into the space under the very tall gentleman’s arm in front of me, ¬†as he held up his phone to video. I had to laugh, because in the end, it didn’t matter. I was seeing Duran Duran live onstage over New Years weekend! I am incredibly lucky, and I know it.

I especially enjoyed Hold Back the Rain because I could see the video screen on the wall behind the band, which showed a collage of pictures of a much younger Duran Duran. I won’t even lie about how emotional I felt when I thought about how that was my childhood up on that screen. I still have trouble getting my brain to accept that the people up on that video screen are in fact the same people on that stage…because there’s no way I could ever have gotten even this close (in proximity at a show) to those¬†guys. There’s no way that I could possibly operate a website dedicated to that¬†band. They were the Gods of my teen years. My brain does not compute!

If that weren’t enough, the sound was FANTASTIC. I’ve sat much farther back at some shows and yet the sound has been less-than-optimal, even if it should have been mixing well at that point. ¬†Of course, when you’re in the front, you hear a lot from the monitors themselves and the sound doesn’t mix well at that point either. However, from where I was sitting this time, it was incredibly clear. Louder than heck, but clear. I had the chance to hear subtle things in the music I hadn’t before. Dom’s guitar part in Hold Back the Rain, John’s bass in the same song, even Sunrise and the tiny snippet of Universe Alone sent shivers down my spine. I loved the show, but there was something else on my mind that night.

Right before the show as we stood having a drink in The Chandelier, my sister-in-law texted me letting me know that my niece was in the hospital. She had been going upstairs and suddenly fainted, falling straight back and hitting her head on their tile floor. She is my only niece, and I adore her. It’s the kind of accident that a parent would have on replay in their head forever, because you want to rush to grab them but can’t get there in time. She’s in ICU now with a skull fracture and a slight brain bleed, but the most frightening part is in the process of evaluating her, they discovered an irregularity in her heart beat. It is a little more involved and more serious than I need to explain here, but she is seventeen, and is getting a pacemaker. 2018 needs to be a healthier year for my family. Enough is enough.

After the show, I tried to put my worries aside and enjoy the final evening out. Easier said than done, of course. Even with a couple of distractions, I had made the decision to get up early the next day and drive home. By 2am, my exhaustion took over and I went to bed, even though I still had people I wanted to see.

It is difficult for me to admit, but this time, the show wasn’t the highlight of the trip for me. Before anyone complains, let me explain. That doesn’t mean the show was bad or that I’m slagging off on the band. In fact, it wasn’t at all. It was just that this weekend, I really needed my friends, people who actually know me, not just the Rhonda who runs Daily Duranie with Amanda, or Rhonda-the-Duran-Duran-fan, but¬†ME. ¬†There might not be many people out there like that, but there are some, and I think they know who they are.¬†I have pictures with people I haven’t seen in many years. I received great big bear hugs from wonderful, generous, kind, fans and friends who care about me. Each one filled my heart and reminded me that I belong with this fantastic tribe.

I had time to stop thinking about how awful the last quarter of this year has been and instead, look ahead to the possibilities of 2018. In truth, the band contributed. Simon said nearly those same words¬†before he introduced Ordinary World. They helped me. I think they even helped him. It’s been a tough year for a lot of people, but the one thing the New Year seems to do – crazily so without fail each year – is give hope for better things to come. Right now, I’ll take it. ]

Happy New Year everyone. I hope I see many more of you this next year, even if the band doesn’t do many shows. ¬†We may or may not have an idea up our sleeve to pass the time … stay tuned.

Las Vegas here we come!

Since I have to leave fairly early for Vegas tomorrow, I decided I’d better blog in advance on Wednesday night. This will post on Thursday morning, so our readers can enjoy while I’m driving through the desert!

Amanda and I are getting to Vegas a day earlier than our other friends, primarily so that we can get some much needed work…and relaxation done! So, I’m driving out this morning, and Amanda arrives later on.

I’m excited about having a little getaway. It all still feels a bit surreal, probably because of the holiday rush – I’m still recovering from Christmas and yet here I am packing to go see Duran Duran in Vegas, of all things!

It would seem that we have quite a crowd ready to invade Hard Rock Live for Late Bar on Friday night at 9:30. If you’re going to be in Vegas, you should definitely make plans to come to where the party is going to be that night! Great music, fun people, lively atmosphere, and it’s Vegas. ¬†If you haven’t already told us you’d like to be included on the list for the comedy show (same place, just prior to Late Bar) and you want to go, please send us a note TODAY so we can add you!

On a personal note I feel a bit guilty going on a trip like this. Things haven’t been the greatest at home, and although my husband and son are taking this opportunity to go do “guy-stuff”, and my two daughters are going to hang out, I still feel bad leaving right now. That said, I need a break. I don’t think I’ve ever been this stressed out. I like it when life is fairly settled. The uncertainty is not fun, and while sure – life can be a great adventure – I’d be much more “up” for it if we knew where Walt (my husband) would be working. The first quarter of 2018 is going to be rocky, that is for sure. I just need to breathe.

Yep, definitely need this break. It’s going to be short, but I’ll take it.

On another note, did anyone see the song DDHQ posted today? It was sort of an odd Watch it Wednesday given that it doesn’t have a video, but they chose Planet Roaring.

While I have said that I don’t care what the band plays anymore, I will admit that I, among many other fans, would love to see them do this one live. Sure, it’s a “bonus” track, but it is such a great one. The words lend themselves so well to calling out to fans – and despite what the band seems to believe about this Vegas show – there are going to be a LOT of fans in that audience on Saturday night, and the venue isn’t that big! Play this one and they’d be liable to have an entire group of fans singing it right back at them.

The problem here is that the band just has too many good songs. It’s a good problem to have. ¬†It’s just a shame that in order for them to take full advantage of their enormous catalog of music, they would need to change-up their show fairly often, which is pretty laborious (so I hear). ¬†So while I may be singing Planet Roaring in my heart…my head is humming Hungry Like the Wolf and loving every minute of it!

Off to finish packing – and yes, Amanda and I will be tweeting and checking in from Vegas as much as possible. Check our Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter!!

Late Bar: The Daily Duranie Holiday Office Party!

Has everyone gotten their travel arrangements together for Las Vegas? If you happen to be arriving the day before the big show at The Cosmopolitan, we might have just the right answer for your evening!

Our friend Jason works at the Hard Rock Cafe in Vegas, and was willing to put together a fabulous meet-up for us. On December 29th at Hard Rock Live at the Hard Rock Cafe on Vegas Strip (across from Monte Carlo) , we are going to party the night away in style, complete with a soundtrack provided by Duran Duran and other New Wave along with Happy hour drink specials. It is going to be a late start Рat 9:30 pm Рthat way those who are arriving closer to evening time have a chance to settle in before they get out and enjoy our own special edition of Late Bar.  Hard Rock Live also has a comedy show happening at 8pm that night, and admission is FREE to  Daily Duranie followers who want to attend. Just RSVP to us at dailyduranie@gmail.com and we will get you on the guest list!

We have an event page set up on Facebook, and in the details I have the end time as 12:30am – truth be told that Facebook insists on an end time, so that seemed like a good one. Otherwise, this could be an all-nighter with Amanda and I reaching up for the sunrise before we call it done!

We have given this the tagline of our holiday office party because it is unusual that Amanda and I are actually in the same state, much less are able to celebrate the holidays together!  I can assure you Рwe will be making up for lost time that night. Come hang out with us, be social, make new friends, and create plenty of memories to bring in 2018!

Hope to see as many of you as possible that night – it will be a great warm up for the following evening!

And we can dance together: Pre-Show Parties!

I tweeted yesterday that whenever the @dailyduranie twitter is blowing up on my phone, I know the time is coming.  TOUR time.  Pre-Show parties are planned and happening!

I leave California, bound by plane for Chicago’s Midway airport in about two weeks. ¬†So yes, tour time is coming! I can hardly believe it. It seems like six months has flown by since we bought pre-sale tickets, although I know it’s been less. ¬†I’ve been busy, to say the least. Funny how writing will make the time fly right by.

Yesterday, Amanda and I spent a few hours solidifying details for the Daily Duranie pre-show parties we are hosting¬†for this tour. ¬†We can’t be everywhere, but we’re hosting what we can, in between moments of just being fans ourselves!

We’ve Got Wristbands!

We will have wristbands and raffle tickets for Duran-items for sale at all of our pre-show parties, so bring cash with you. ¬†The proceeds will go towards our convention fund (save the date: we’re doing another Durandemonium August 10-11 2017!)

July 8 & 9 (Ravinia – Chicago)

For¬†both¬†nights of Ravinia, we are hosting pre-show gatherings¬†on the lawn area by the pavilion where the band will be playing. ¬†I’m including a map with the area to look for us (and our Daily Duranie sign), but you should know a few other things as well:

  1. Gates open at 4pm for Ravinia
  2. Our gathering begins at 5:00pm – 6:30pm.
  3. We will have a couple of blankets and towels but you might want to bring one of your own to sit down on.
  4. This is BYO-everything. ¬†We’re just meeting and coordinating¬†as a group to hang out and mingle before the show.
  5. Food is available at Ravinia, but it is also common to bring your own picnic – it’s whatever you want to do.
  6. We are meeting somewhere on the grassy knoll area that is directly behind the pavilion seats. If you walk in the main gates and go past the Martin Theater (should be on your right), we’re going to be closer to the pavilion, also on the right side. ¬†See map for details.
  7. Look for the Daily Duranie poster!

7/13 (Molson Amphitheater – Toronto)

We’ve set up a group reservation at the Hard Rock Cafe in Toronto, which is near the Amphitheater. For this party, we definitely need your¬†serious¬†RSVP on the Facebook event page for this gathering (link provided below) ¬†Please do¬†NOT¬†RSVP if you’re not going to the show, do not live anywhere near the US and/or do not plan to be there that night. We love that everyone wants to be with us in spirit and we appreciate that – but please¬†do not RSVP¬†unless you are seriously attending.

The party will begin at 4:30 pm at the Hard Rock in Toronto, and it will be a blast!¬† Depending upon the number of people planning to join us, we’ll either do a large table or do more of a stand-up table and mingle set-up. ¬†The Hard Rock has been awesome about working with us in the past and so we really appreciate their ongoing support for our parties!

7/29 (Mandalay Bay Event Center, Las Vegas)

For this event, we are still coordinating the timing with DDM so that our party will not interfere with the VIP Cocktail Reception taking place that evening. ¬†What I can tell you though, is that we’re going to do our own Happy Hour/Cocktail gathering at Eye Candy in the Mandalay Bay Hotel. ¬†This is simply for drinks and chatting, and the venue was chosen for its central location and very open seating (the bar opens at 3pm, and my best guess is that we’ll meet-up around 4:30 if not a bit earlier). ¬†Pro tip: there is no food available at this bar, so you should plan and eat accordingly!

Naturally, we’ll keep everyone updated as much as possible from here, but for the most accurate information and to let us know if you’re coming to any of the parties we’re hosting, please see the Facebook events page….and spread the invites to your friends! ¬†The more the merrier! ¬†Please let us know you’re attending. ¬†We can’t wait to see as many of you as possible!

Paper Gods Tour – This is Happening!

I woke up feeling a change in the air this morning. Was it electricity? A difference in the air pressure?? Humidity??

Duran Duran is in the US doing promo in New York before they get the Paper Gods tour party started with their shows at the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York; followed by Dock Rocks, and Nile’s FOLD fest next week.¬† I’m guessing it was the nervous excitement in the air…either that or it really was the humidity we’re currently experiencing in Los Angeles…

Amanda and I can’t WAIT to get this started! It’s been nearly three years since the band last toured here (longest three years of my life and I say that with all the love and sincerity in the world!), and we are excited¬†to see what the band has up their sleeve(s) this time.

Amanda and I want to invite anyone who is seeing any of their shows, to please be our special correspondents on the scene and send write-ups, pictures, reviews, etc. to us at dailyduranie(at)gmail(dot)com. We will happily post anything we receive, giving complete credit to those who participate of course! This site isn’t just about Amanda and I, it’s about FANS in general, and we’d love to include experiences from anyone who cares to share.

Additionally, if you’re trying to keep up with where the band is at any given time, I’d like to point out our updated calendar – if you are on our home page, there is a navigational menu at the top of the page. Click on “Look into the Future” and that will bring you to our version of the band’s calendar. There are shows, events, any PR that we’re aware of, etc. As Duran Duran releases more Paper Gods tour dates, etc…we add them, and we try to include as much information as possible so it’s a one-stop informational hub for fans.

Lastly, if you are attending the Hollywood Bowl show in California, I want to make you aware that Amanda and I are planning a Daily Duranie fan pre-show party/meetup for the afternoon of the show. Currently it looks as though it will be at the Hard Rock Cafe at the Hollywood/Highland Center around 3pm or so, and will go until 5 or 5:30. Please plan on joining us – I will have more detailed information up on all social media once plans are set.

There is a shuttle that goes directly from the parking lot at the center to the Bowl (you buy tickets onsite, not online), so it should be convenient for everyone. Just a tip, the parking at the Hollywood Bowl itself is limited…and it is stacked parking, which means once you’re in, you’re not leaving until the show is over and everyone around you has left. You can plan on the exit from the lot at the Bowl taking up to an hour. So, the shuttle might be a better option for you – there are several lots for park and ride as well as shuttles like the one I’m describing – check out the website for the Hollywood Bowl for more information.

In the meantime, I’m off to see Spandau Ballet tonight; and I’m looking forward to posting all kinds of Duran Duran news in the coming weeks!
