Miami and that set list: Maybe it’s time to stop worrying about it?

True confession: I didn’t hear the show from Miami on Saturday night. I was thrilled it was being streamed, but what I forgot in my excitement was that I had somewhere else I had to be – my daughter’s dance show. I probably could have snuck in the first portion of it before we needed to leave, but there just wasn’t time for me to sit, so I missed out. It happens.  I would have loved to hear Lori Majewski and Richard Blade’s pre-show happenings, but it was not to be. I know they did great, though!

I did, however, check in periodically to see what anyone was saying on Twitter. There were a few fans in the audience that sent us pictures and told us it blew their minds – that’s always good to read! Honestly, from the size of the place I would have lost my mind to be included in that audience. I would have needed oxygen, for sure!

One of the things I saw most was that the set list was pretty much the same as shows toward the very end of the Paper Gods tour. Maybe I’m just in a groove, but I’m surprised anyone expected it to change, really. These are just one-off shows here and there, and the idea of the band getting together to hammer out an entirely new set list (with new songs, not just switching the order up) seems lofty at this point. I know what many will say, because I’ve said the words myself, “Other bands do it.”  Yes, they do. But those bands aren’t THIS band.

I tweeted about this yesterday. I’m tired of complaining about the set list, so I’m just not going to anymore. I’m not chiding anyone else for having opinions about it, though – we’re all different. For me, it just got to a point where I needed to make a choice: either keep going to the shows for the pure joy of being there regardless of how many times I’ve heard their hits, or stop going, and shut up. Not everyone is going to agree with my point of view here, and that’s fine. I have seen some people say that they’re not going to any more shows until they switch up the set. I get that. There’s no “wrong” answer.  I know I’m a lot happier these days, and for me that’s all that matters.  I didn’t want any of this to stop being fun, ever.  I get a lot of joy out of seeing Duran Duran. I feel like I have made good friends, and I can’t really think of people I’d rather spend time with for at least part of my New Year celebration. To me, it’s a win the whole way around.

Just a reminder – we are having a meet up the night before the show (12/29) at Hard Rock Live at the Hard Rock Cafe on the Strip!  If you can make it, please join us! Also, if you are interested in being on the guest list for comped tickets to see the comedy show that will take place at Hard Rock Live at 8pm before our Late Bar party starts – let us know at dailyduranie@gmail.com and we’ll add you!

Miami Live Stream Reactions

Wow.  Today has gotten away from me.  After finishing up grading papers, ordering Christmas presents and doing some household chores, I realized how late it was!  On to bigger and better things…did you get a chance to tune into the Duran show in Miami for SiriusXM last night?  I did!  I have to admit that it increased my productivity significantly, which is probably why I was able to get through all my grading!  That’s the solution to my problem!  Let’s have Duran play live every night with a live stream in order to get through everything I need to do. I love it!  On top of my efficiency, what other reactions did I have?  Here are my very random thoughts, in no particular order.

Super Small Show:

Based on the pictures of the venue and the pre-show with Lori Majewski and Richard Blade, it is clear that the venue was ridiculously small.  I think they said something about how the capacity was around 250 before they added the mixing board.  Wow.  Lori commented about how she had never seen them in such a small place and how Simon would be able to see and touch each member of the audience.  I am right there with her.  I, too, have never seen them in such a small place.  The smallest place I ever saw them  probably held around 1500-2000 people.  Obviously, I, for one, would love, love, love to see them in a venue this size.  I haven’t had a chance to see/hear from anyone who was there, but I have to wonder.  Was it amazing?  Was it everything you thought it would be?

Live Stream:

As I stated earlier, I loved that the show was live streamed for all of us to enjoy.  That said, it only made me want to see them live more.  It felt like a giant tease to me.  I could sense the performance, the crowd, etc but it felt removed, through a filter of some kind, something.  As someone who knows the power of Duran’s live show, it left me aching for the real thing.  Sometimes, I could hear the crowd and sometimes I couldn’t so I couldn’t get a proper read of how the show went.  For example, Simon encouraged the crowd to chant, “play the f’ing bass, John,” during the intros and I didn’t hear anything.  I assume that some fans there were chanting but I don’t know.  Likewise, I kept wanting to turn up the volume to get that all encompassing feeling that I get at a live show but couldn’t get there.  Needless to say, I suspect that I will really let it go with excitement in Vegas.

Set List:

I have heard that some fans were annoyed by the lack of set list changes as they played pretty much what they had been playing in the summer/fall with the exception of having Mark Ronson join them for Pressure Off (with a little extra of Uptown Funk.  How cool!).  I have two thoughts on that.  First, this show, like the ones coming up in Vegas and Dubai, are not officially part of the Paper Gods Tour from what I understand.  They are not part of something new either.  I wouldn’t want something brand new to be attached at the end of a big tour.  I would want something new as part of a new cycle or as part of some anniversary celebration.  These shows are not that.  Second, and probably more importantly, I could complain about the set list until the cows come home, but I won’t..  (For the record, people, when I left a note about Planet Earth, that was a joke.  A joke.  I was not really mad or upset.  I just wanted to give a little grief.  For fun.)  It just isn’t worth getting upset over.  Right now, at the end of 2017, I have WAY bigger issues to worry about.  I go to Duran to have fun, to escape from real life, etc.  I no longer want to ruin that fun with complaining about the set list.

3 Week Countdown:

Speaking of that escape from real life, I leave for Vegas in less than 3 weeks.  I’m not ready.  At all.  I have some idea of what I will be wearing but not totally.  My travel plans are generally set.  But the tour binder has not been started and won’t be until the Christmas to do list is done or until winter break starts.  Needless to say, I’m not feeling very ready.  On the other hand, as my friend, Suzie, said last night, she is starting to get that Duran feeling.  Last night, I felt that, too.  My excitement level increased dramatically!  I have started a countdown!  I cannot wait to see my friends, to exchange gifts with Rhonda, to forget about reality for a few days.  Our Late Bar party should be a blast, too, for those coming to the area for the show.  Details can be found at our event page here!  All in all, it should be an amazingly fun time!  I cannot wait!!!  I hope the city and the band are ready for us!!!

Duran Duran in Miami Tonight!

Who is ready for a little Duran Duran tonight?  As you know, Duran Duran is playing in Miami Beach at the Faena Theatre!  This is a special show for SiriusXM.  As the press release on the band’s official website states, “This very special performance for SiriusXM coincides with 2017’s Art Basel in Miami Beach, the world-renowned premier art show and gathering for Modern and contemporary art.”

While I’m not sure how many Duran Duran fans are present there, many of us will be enjoying the live stream tonight on the Sirius channels, 1st Wave and SiriusPulse.  The best part?  One does not need to be a paid subscriber to Sirius.  You simply need to go for a free 30 day trial, in order to be able to enjoy the show.  Some of you might be wondering where and how you go about doing this.  Start out by going to http://siriusxm.com/freetrial

Then, you just need to fill out your name, email address, etc.  You don’t even need to provide a credit card!  Once you get to Sirius, you can search from one of those channels and you are all set!  The show starts at 8 pm EST with a pre-show with Lori Majewski and Richard Blade.  Apparently, the show will also replay at 12 am EST, in case you had plans during the live show.

I know that Rhonda and I hoped to be able to listen and do some sort of Twitter party.  Unfortunately, Rhonda is busy with an event for one of her kiddos and I’m drowning in grading.  (For the record, I wonder why I assign papers?!  Oh yeah…because writing is super important not just for the disciplines of History and Women’s Studies but also in life.)  Nonetheless, we are disappointed that we couldn’t do more to celebrate this little event.  I plan on tuning in but will not be able to focus as I would like.  Instead, I’ll be forced to multi-task a bit.  That means that my social media presence will be much less than what I would like.

That said, I would love, love, love for people who were lucky enough to be there to send their experiences to us in some way, shape or form.  Tweet at us, email us, send us messages about the show.  I would say the same for anyone who listens and/or participates on social media.  I want to be able to blog about people’s reactions, thoughts, etc. as well as my own tomorrow.  I know that I dn’tt want it just to be my thoughts about the show, especially since my attention will be split.

Until then, I’m off to get as much grading done as possible!

Miami Show

Yesterday, at work, I was frantically trying to help students finish a project while planning for next week when I got a twitter notification from Duran Duran.  Normally, I take the time to look at the tweet but I just couldn’t right then.  I took note that something was happening in Duranland and that I should look more closely later.  I figured that was cool since Rhonda would send me a text if it was something that I had to immediately respond to.  Needless to say, later meant today.  Ouch.

So what was the big news?  Duran Duran is going to be performing in Miami Beach on Saturday, December 9th.  Here’s the full press release on SiriusXM’s blog:

GRAMMY Award-winning, iconic British band Duran Duran will perform a special invitation-only show for SiriusXM on Saturday, December 9 at the Faena Theater in Miami Beach.

The exclusive performance for SiriusXM will feature Duran Duran playing signature music from throughout their career, including songs from their most recent, Top 10 charting studio album, Paper Gods.

This very special performance for SiriusXM coincides with 2017’s Art Basel in Miami Beach, the world-renowned premier art show and gathering for modern and contemporary art.  It will also be the penultimate show on the band’s two-year Paper Gods World Tour before they return to the studio in January 2018.

“As long-time fans of SiriusXM, we are really looking forward to performing this special show at such a beautiful and intimate venue in Miami,” remarked Duran Duran’s John Taylor. “It’s going to be an up close and personal affair, a truly one-of-a-kind evening, and we look forward to getting to know everyone who attends.”

The private performance will air live on Saturday, December 9 via satellite on The Pulse (Ch. 15) and 1st Wave (Ch. 33) and through the SiriusXM app on smartphones and other connected devices, as well as online at http://www.siriusxm.com.

SiriusXM subscribers since November 1, 2017, can enter for the chance to win a trip to Miami including airfare, hotel stay and a pair of tickets to the show!  See Official Rules for complete details at siriusxm.com/DuranDuran

For more information on Duran Duran, visit www.duranduran.com.

Well then.  Let’s dive into this piece of news, shall we?  So, this show will coincide with a contemporary art show.  That’s cool.  John Taylor also made it sound like a pretty special show by saying things like “up close and personal affair,” “one-of-a-kind evening,” and “getting to know everyone who attends.”  Well then again.

Here’s the catch.  It is private performance.  That doesn’t mean that all hope is lost for Duranies.  First of all, SiriusXM subscribers have a chance to win a contest for airfare, hotel and a pair of tickets.  That’s super cool, but the fine print says that the subscribers must have been subscribed before November 1st.  While I’m sure that bothers lots of people who wanted a chance for that prize who weren’t subscribers, I can appreciate Sirius wanting to reward their members.  That said, if you are a member with DuranDuranMusic, you also have a chance to attend this show.  According to the site:  “If you are a member in good standing and can ATTEND THE SHOW (so check on travel arrangements BEFORE you enter) then email DDVIP@magusentertainment.com with “SIRIUS MIAMI” in the subject line with your DD VIP Username in the email. FOUR winners will be chosen at random to attend the show with a guest. The Duran Duran VIP Fan Community is providing tickets only.”  Last but not least, the show will be aired live on SiriusXM channels, The Pulse and First Wave.

I want to wish everyone who enters either the Sirius contest or the DDM contest good luck!  Then, I will be super excited to hear how the show and the experience goes for everyone who gets to go.  I, for one, will be at home, grading, lesson planning, preparing Christmas gifts, etc.  On top of that, I’ll be getting ready to go to the show in Vegas.  I, for one, feel VERY lucky that I get to see a Duran show at all this winter.  So, I’ll be the cheerleader for all the Duranies who are trying to get to this show.  I hope it is truly one-of-a-kind and very special.
