Today in Duran History – Toronto 1982

On this date in 1982, Duran Duran played  at Concert Hall in Toronto, Canada.  This show was part of the Rio tour, which was divided into two halves, in order for the band to be the support act for the Blondie tour.  Interestingly enough, this was not the band’s first time in Toronto as they had played there in 1981.

Since this is an older show, I could not find a setlist or clips of the show.  Did anyone attend this show?  What was it like?  I know this much.  Every time I post about a show from Duran’s early days, I find myself so wishing that I had the ability to go back in time to attend all these shows!

  1. I was there! 🙂 No clue on the setlist, but I remember there being no seats, so we were forced to stand and dance to the whole show. Luckily, I was young enough (just turned 18) to handle that, lol. I was dancing at the time at a club called Nuts and Bolts (at Dundas and Yonge, if anyone from Toronto reads this) and the dance-floor was packed for the “Planet Earth” and “Girls On Film” videos they played. It took one look at Simon and I was hooked and HAD to see them live! I still have my ticket stub and they were well worth every penny of the $10.50 I spent. The show itself wasn’t flashy, no video screens, no special lighting, etc. Just the band (wearing pretty casual clothes compared to how they amped up the look soon afterwards) rockin’ out. I’ve seen many other concerts since, but this one will always hold a special place in my Duranie heart.

  2. I remember it was incredibly hot that night inside the Concert Hall. I’ve been to many shows there, but this was crazy hot – well over 100F. Water was dripping down the walls. The band only played about 55 minutes, but it was a great show. Sorry I can’t tell you a setlist either.

  3. I was there with several friends. The day was blistering hot and very humid. A few things I remember:

    – Rio was first song played
    – Don’t remember order of songs but they played most songs from DD and Rio: HLTW, Last Chance on the Stairway, Hold Back the Rain, New Religion, Save a Prayer, (did not play The Chauffer and My Own Way). From DD, they played Panet Earth, GOF, Is there Anyone out There, Careless Memories, Night Boat, Friends of Mine). An encore was played, but can’t remember what. May have been a repeat of earlier song
    – tickets were $10.50 general admission
    – Simon had torn a cartilage prior to show so was not as mobile
