Let’s cut to the chase. I have a very simple question. How did we get from here:
Once more, for effect in case you weren’t paying attention. We went from this:
I won’t lie, I have this urge to reach out and twist the ends of that thing…then shave it, drop to my knees, clasp my hands as if in prayer and then lift them to the sky screaming “It was for the good of the people, Simon!”
…….and yet somehow, that sounds so much worse when I read it in print. (Just assume I’m wincing here. I am. Trust me.)
Since the very moment these were first released yesterday, my entire Twitterfeed and Facebook has been taken up with images such as the Pringle Man:
It would seem that EVERY Duranie in the world has come across those photos, and has voiced their concern. Should we buy Simon a razor? Does he need someone to just say “Shave”? Should we take poor Yasmin aside and tell her that we too have husbands that sometimes think wearing flannel and crocs is OK? (Mine thinks mixing kelly green with forest green is cool. They’re both green, right?? *sigh*)
Naturally, those of us who have been around a while – and by last count I think that is pretty much all of us, know that Simon couldn’t possibly care any less what we think. I myself thought more than once about starting a Twitter campaign where we all change our profile picture to one of the Pringles guy, but I daresay it would just keep that handlebar mustache going. And growing, as one of my dear friends said yesterday.
Let’s be honest, the whole idea about “caring what the fans think” probably went out the window long before he ever showed up in Birmingham wearing pink leopard print pants, don’t you think? I mean, this is probably not the first misstep I’ve seen in my years as a fan, and I’m pretty sure it won’t be the last….and somehow I still find myself thankful that the band doesn’t tweet about how WE look a lot of the time.
Bottom line? We’re talking, aren’t we? He is about to enter back into the DuranZone in March…and we’re already talking. Not a single note has been recorded, a word written, and yet that band is still being chatted about. Pictures are circulating, blogs are being written….and the mustache is a growin’.
I can’t wait for a tour!!!

exactly! Like I said, he's crazy like a fox and none of us (myself included!) can stop talking about the 'stache, which means talking about him, which means talking about Duran…. I did change my twitter avi to clean shaven LeBon, even though I know the more we ask him to get rid of it, the more likely he is to keep it. Michduran
Rhonda, you picked some of my favorite vintage SLB shots to illustrate your point (very well I might add).
As I've said, to each their own. I'm trying to appreciate the man for the lovely face and stellar voice under that travesty of facial hair.
I never thought I'd be begging for the return of LeBeard so much but at this point, I'd gladly take it.
I loved his beard, to be honest…but then, my husband has a goatee and keeps it at my insistence…so there is that.
HOWEVER…
I am picturing myself at a show watching him sing….and it's a MUCH different vision than what has taken place in the past. I just can't see myself screaming in the same way. Not that I was ever a Simon-girl, but this just goes way beyond.
Then again, it IS about the music, isn't it? 😀

Amanda won't be able to sit with me at the shows if he keeps that, because I won't be able to stop laughing – and she almost killed me during the UK tour when I kept laughing during Leopard (don't ask). -R
I laughed out loud at this…I miss the beard too. It is all about the music, ie I don't need
lead singer of my band looking like a purveyor of kiddie porn while he sings my favorite songs.
Rhonda,
I couldn’t agree with you more. Every time I see a current picture, every comment and comparative image posted by fellow Duranies pops into my head. I can’t help it, and then of course I am laughing so hard I can’t breathe (so you are more than welcome to stand by me during a concert, if the current look continues). And I should add that I am more attracted to Simon than any other member of the group- and still the laughter continues. However, I do admire him for doing what he wants and not what the public wants or thinks he should do. And I know he is getting a kick out of all the hoopla us fans are giving him, which just makes me smile and love him more.
I don't know if anyone else has mentioned it, but my first thought is that he looks a lot like the guy in the W.B. Mason logo. It's an office supply company that started in the Boston area (also a Red Sox sponsor), so you may not have heard of them. I can't put a copy of the logo here, but Google “WB Mason logo” and you will see the uncanny resemblance!

Just had to say I HAD that magazine(the one with Simon in the Is There Something I Should Know outfit). 🙂
At least it got us talking. LOL Simon's always good for that. 🙂
sadly, we're never going to get Arcadia Simon again. and i actually liked the beard (my hubby has his winter beard now, will go back to a goatee in the spring) but many people screamed for its removal. well, he shaved it.
i happen to think it's hilarious and an amazing display of his LeBonness.
Chris…you just made me snort!! LOL 😀 -R
I liked his beard too…he looked good with it. -R
He does seem to know what he's doing, doesn't he?!? 😀 -R
Crazy stuff like this makes me love Simon even more. He's a riot. He cares about the music, but owns his own image when he's not posing for album covers. Good on him.
Wow! I’ve seen the moustache pictures last evening posted on an Italian Message Board and I actually couldn’t believe at my eyes! Later I laughed: I think it was the only thing left I can do.
I am a RO-SI long time fan, I am aware of Simon’s changes of look. His “moustache look” at the release of their latest awesome album All You Need is Now left me a bit perplexed, and then I got used to the moustache and found him good-looking.
I can remember I even later signed a petition to have Simon shave his beard and all, as I was convinced that the “moustache + beard look” was an All You Need is Now sort of “trademark”.
How do I feel now? I still have a feeling that the “moustache look” is not going to last so long, but I know my hero, (who is the front man of a band that let their imagery play an important, strong role in their success) isn’t anyone you can make plans with, he’s unpredictable!!
Very funny blog post!
Hi again, I said this the first time I saw the mustache, and I'm going to keep saying it, “Simon looks like a French movie villain from the 1960's, with that mustache.” Even though I have never been a Simon girl, I have always been able to appreciate his looks, but this is just too silly, even for Simon. Thank the Gods he has such an amazing voice, otherwise he would be laughed off stage, but then again maybe Simon's thinking of starting a new career as a comedian???
As always, that is my goal…
