On the Cinema Wall

Figures.  I had a blog post all written for today when, of course, Duran had to announce something.  Losers.  Just kidding.  I will just have to post that entry later on in the weekend.  So, what did Duran announce?  Apparently, Unstaged, the film directed by David Lynch, from the band’s 2011 show at the Mayan Theater in LA, will be screened at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City on Monday, November 4th at 7:30.  Tickets are available for both the screening and for a cocktail reception starting on Monday, October 28th.  The tickets to the screening are $12 for adults.  The cocktail reception requires a VIP purchase by people who are American Express credit card holders.  This reception will be at a nearby restaurant and the band will be there.  Likewise, the band will be at the screeening and will participate in a question and answer session afterwards.  All details can be found on the band’s official website here.

This is obviously exciting and very cool news even for those like me who aren’t big fans of the film!  I knew that Unstaged had been shown at other film festivals, but the Museum of Modern Art?!  How cool!  I love that the event is open to the public, even if I could not afford to travel right now!  Of course, I bet that the tickets are limited, which, of course, would make one very stressful little presale for those trying to get tickets on Monday.  I also wonder if there are ticket limits, especially with those cheap prices.  As for the VIP tickets, I did notice that there were no prices listed and I can only imagine them to be “out of my price range”.  LOL.  Yet, again, how cool for people who can afford it to attend a cocktail reception with the band.  While I bet that they will be busy talking to those they need to talk to, it would be cool to see them enjoying this moment.  As we know, art and art museums are a big deal to Duran Duran.  Of course, this isn’t a normal concert performance, but still.  Their music influenced David Lynch to create the visuals that he did.  Now, while I will admit that it wasn’t really my thing, I would still be super excited to see it on the big screen.  As the attendees at Durandemonium learned last week, there is nothing better than Duran on the big screen.  Of course, for this film, I might be screaming to see more Duran as opposed to screaming for the DoJo like I did during A Diamond in the Mind!  I, for one, though, would love to have a guest blog from someone who is able to attend.

Speaking of attending, I did quickly glance at the comments to this piece of news.  Most people who commented either mentioned how cool they thought it was or stated that they planned to attend since they were in the area.  I admit that I’m a little surprised that I didn’t hear some complaining by others.  What sort of complaining was I expecting?  Simple.  I thought people might be expressing some frustration by the short notice.  Maybe, some people thought that they could have traveled if they only had more time to schedule their lives, buy plane tickets, get hotel rooms, etc.  Yet, I haven’t seen comments like this.  This could either be because I missed those comments, which is very possible, or people wouldn’t want to go out of their way to travel for this.  I guess it is also possible that people just understand how it is likely that DDHQ had little to say about when the announcement would come out and when the ticket sales would start.  Perhaps, people just aren’t that interested because they didn’t like Unstaged or because it appears that the Q&A session will be streamed live on the museum’s site.  It is hard to say.  It is also possible that people are just not thinking much about Duran right now and weren’t paying attention since they knew that the band was in the studio.  Maybe, some are still recovering from Durandemonium!  All speculation on my part.

I, for one, am thankful that the question and answer session will be streamed live, assuming that I am reading the press release correctly.  I know that Rhonda and I plan on watching it “together”.  While we might not be able to be there in person, we could at least get a sense of it this way.  Besides, we figured that it might make for a fun blog on the following day.  So, what about the rest of you?  Going to NYC?  Watching online?  Ignoring it all?

By Daily Duranie

Once upon a time, there were two Duran Duran fans. One named Amanda, the other named Rhonda. Over many vodka tonics, they would laugh about the idea of one day writing a book about their fan experiences. While that manuscript is still being composed...Rhonda thought they should write a blog. (What was she THINKING?!) Lo and behold: The Daily Duranie was born.

  1. I must be completely missing the impact here – because while I think it's nice that it's being shown, I really don't think it's a big deal. I mean, not for fans. Maybe for the band because it's an honor, but most of us have seen it. Heck, I was there when it was being filmed. I don't really see/hear a ton of people talking about it – but I hope that those who go enjoy themselves. I think it's a matter of the convenience factor – if I were near NYC, I'd consider it…but I'm not, and I would never fly all that way just to see it. There's going to be so many other things to come with the new album and all, I just figure it's better to wait and plan for “new” things than bother with a film that's already two years old.

  2. Going to the event! And definitely going to try to get the VIP ticket! Taking the train from PA, and hanging out in the train station afterward until the morning train home!

  3. I would love to go to this event! Even though I am rationally thinking of all of the reasons I *can't* go right now, that little (Big! lol) Duranie part of my brain won't quit thinking of ways to make it work. Like you guys, I'm not a big fan of the film. But like so many others I am seriously craving some live DD right now…even if it is just a Q&A session.

Re: complaints I actually do have one (surprise surprise, haha) It's a shame that the fanclub isn't offering something…. like advance tickets, a limited number of lower priced VIP tickets, a special t-shirt… freaking anything. I know the pros & cons of fanclub membership have been discussed quite a bit. But it does kinda suck that during a DD dry spell the fan club can't cough up some incentive to be a fan club member when an opportunity to see the guys arises.

All that being said… even if I don't make it to NYC I am SO excited for this event and just as excited for the fans who are actually able to make it! Hope you all have a great time 🙂

  4. I did see that DDM was offering a ticket contest to win a pair of tickets. It is something. I suspect, though, that they couldn't really offer much in this situation.

  5. My bad, I just saw that too! D'oh! I never got an email from the fan club about the contest. It's been ages since they send emails, don't know why I still expect them too. Just need to get used to reading the front page of their website.

  6. I simply wonder why did they never do a DVD on the Unstaged show??
I and many other fans from Italy, we think it's one of the best things they ever did in their career, it's on the most voted shows/concerts of their life on the road so far on the DD portion off (my own) Music Awards, (scheduled to be visible on the Net in December).
Can we Italian fans forgive them for the underestimated celebration of the Unstaged event? Time will say.

  7. I wouldn't be surprised if they will do a DVD of it. They probably can't do it now because of this screening and other festival appearances. Time will tell.
