Top 10 Duran Videos (at the moment!)

Recently, I have been working on a video playlist that will be shown during the banquet portion of Durandemonium, the 2013 Duran Duran Fan Convention.  Yes, you read that right.  There will be videos, as there should be, right?  Of course.  This is Duran Duran we are talking about and celebrating being fans of.  This playlist has required me to watch a bunch of Duran videos and, as you know, there are many.  Obviously, this was not the most difficult task for a Duranie like myself.  In order to create this playlist, we asked people for video suggestions.  We wanted to know what the convention attendees wanted to see.  Almost every video was mentioned and, obviously, many videos were mentioned a lot.  I’m sure you could guess which ones were requested the most.  Yes, those videos were very often the classics, the ones we all grew up with and know every second of.  Interestingly enough, as I compiled the list of videos and put them on DVDs for the banquet playlist, I began thinking about which videos I wanted to see.  This quickly turned into a top 10 videos list, which was actually quite challenging to create.  As you can imagine, I had a hard time just limiting myself to 10.  Here is the list I came up with today.  Tomorrow’s list might be different.  🙂

1.  New Moon on Monday (movie version)-I love the storyline!  My area of focus during college was social and political movements.  Revolutions were often studied and discussed!  Plus, who doesn’t love dialogue!

2.  Save a Prayer-To me, this video is just plain beautiful.  That image of the five of them standing, looking up at that statue was burned into my brain at an early age.  Awesome.

3.  All You Need Is Now-This video really captured the feeling surrounding the All You Need Is Now era.  Of course, it doesn’t hurt that I have been to that amazing cemetery!

4. Sunrise (John Taylor version)-I am and will always be a John fan.  This video captures how I view John’s journey in between leaving the band in 1997 to the reunion.  He had to walk alone for awhile to find his way back.  Plus, he doesn’t look half bad here!  😉

5.  Planet Earth-Classic new romantic video!  Plus, it was their first!

6.  Falling Down-I still think that this video was brilliant.  I blogged about my interpretation of this video, which, in my opinion, says so much about the band and their fans.

7.  Serious-I have one thing to say here:  JOSI!

8.  Lonely in Your Nightmare-Another beautiful video that speaks to me, emotionally.

9.  Wild Boys-Again, I like the storyline.  I like the idea of the band members being in a difficult situation and working to free each other.

10.  Rio-I appreciate the humor of this video, despite it being so overplayed.  This video was often believed to show Duran indulging in wealth.  No, it is really about how these guys are still dorks despite having money and couldn’t win over the woman, no matter what they tried!

I have about five other videos that I could have included in this list.  It wasn’t easy to make.  So, now that I have shared mine, you need to share yours!!!

By Daily Duranie

Once upon a time, there were two Duran Duran fans. One named Amanda, the other named Rhonda. Over many vodka tonics, they would laugh about the idea of one day writing a book about their fan experiences. While that manuscript is still being composed...Rhonda thought they should write a blog. (What was she THINKING?!) Lo and behold: The Daily Duranie was born.

  1. Here's mine:

    10.Serious – Can't deny the JoSi. 😉
9.Too Much Information – The song alone rocks, but the bright flashiness of the video makes it even
more so. Plus, shirtless Simon. 🙂
8.All You Need is Now – Love the simplicity of the video and they all look fantastic!
7.Night Boat – The creepy storyline is interesting, and love the cheesy dialogue delivery.
6.Out of My Mind – Gorgeous, creepy, and mysterious all at the same time. The period wear is a nice touch too.
    5.Rio – Because well, it's Rio. 🙂
4.White Lines – Very indicative of the era, so there's some sentimental value there for me.
    3. Wild Boys – Like you mentioned, the storyline is good. Plus the set is incredible. Also, since it was essentially *instead* of a full-on movie for Russell Mulcahy, it makes it easy to visualize what a full movie could have been like – starring DD of course! (At least in our imagination.)
2.Lonely In Your Nightmare – Just plain swoon-worthy, for a fan of any band member. 🙂
1.Ordinary World – No surprise coming from me I suppose; but it's gorgeous, they're gorgeous, and I can't help but love it.

  2. Yes, I must agree with your NMOM selection. I do believe that Andy is absolutely adorable in that video and the movie version led me to major in French and Elementary Ed in college. I just had to know what was being said! lol Thanks for sharing your list! So ready for Chicago!

  3. Here are my Top 10 “Classic Duran Duran Videos”

    10. Nightboat-Very “Night of the Living Dead” in feel and tone. “They're coming to get you,Simon”. Plus, the delivery of Simon quoting Shakespeare is classic and priceless, and how many of us have honesty quoted his lines when listening to the song?
    9. Save A Prayer-Iconic and inspirational video especially toward the end where the guys look up at the same time and it slo-mos. Awesome!
    8. Girls On Film-Even though the controversial video is what many people remember, there was a tamer version that stands out,but not as memorable.
    7. A View To A Kill-Duran Duran+James Bond=Priceless. “Bon,Simon Le Bon”. I geeked out for that the first time I saw it,and I am a huge Bond fan!
    6. Union Of The Snake-A mini movie in itself,I loved this journey the band went on. And of course,Nick,as the evil ruler. He had the best hair and make-up in that video. And clothes.
5.Wild Boys-Not much else needs to be said about this.
    4. Careless Memories- Cheesy overacting by Simon, and some story in this video make it one of my faves. Plus,it's one of my fave songs!
    3. Rio-Yacht,model,saxophone,chases,enough said.
    2. Planet Earth-All time fave song and very simple video. Plus,I wondered what Simon would've jumped into at the end of it? Hmmmmmmm……
    1. Hungry Like The Wolf-Duran Duran+Raiders Of The Lost Ark=The video that made me an instant fan of them and I had to have the hats!

Those are my choices and reasons. Glad I could share them with everyone.
