There’s a Camera Rolling

Did you hear? DDHQ is gearing up to switch out the LOOKBOOK on their official merchandise site and wants to include fans!

Yesterday, this was posted on their official instagram:

COMPETITION TIME ! This Summer we are updating the DD Store Lookbook and we want YOU to be a part of it. If you want the chance of not only featuring in it, but receiving a £50 gift voucher to be spent in our store, follow the steps below:
1) Take a picture of you and/or friend(s) or family member(s) wearing, using or displaying one of your favourite pieces of Duran Duran merchandise.
Upload the picture to Instagram (Note: please save the original full sized image, as we will require these from the winners)
2) Tag @duranduran and use the hashtag #DDlookbook2020…include a brief background to the shot if applicable

There were some questions that I’ll try to answer here in case you missed the posting.

  • Some asked if it had to be official merchandise, and the answer was no – do what you do!
  • The same goes for homemade items!
  • The merchandise does not have to be brand new (as in it doesn’t have to be from the newest line)
  • The pictures can be old or new

The thing is, there were a few people that became immediately annoyed by the idea of wearing merchandise because it insinuates that one has the $40+ to buy said merchandise. I’d just like to point out that DDHQ made sure to say you could wear whatever, it should just be Duran Duran. This opens the door for anyone who desires to participate.

This seems like a very cool contest to be a part of, and I might even scan through my pictures to see if I’ve got anything worthy of sending in. I’d love to see fans participate and become part of this year’s Lookbook.

The last time they put one together, the pictures used were mainly of young people – children and friends of people on the DD team. While the pictures were good, many felt that they weren’t fairly representative of the people who support the band – the fans. I was actually one of those people who spoke out. My thoughts were simply that merchandise is usually bought by fans, so why wouldn’t fans be the ones in the photos – or at the very least – people who are in our broad age range?? Granted, I didn’t mind the kids in the pictures. They were cute, and I get it. I just thought that maybe it would be a great way to engage fans if they included us. And here we are.

(so yes, I’ll be digging through my pictures to send something in, even though I am pretty certain my photo will end up as the lining to a birdcage or similar!)

Here’s our chance to represent the band, and I hope that many will take the time to follow through. Can’t complain if we’re not willing to participate when asked, right??

Have fun!!

Merch Matters??

I had great plans for today. To put it simply, I looked forward to not doing anything after spending a lot of my week getting ready for a campaign weekend of action taking place tomorrow and Sunday. The goal was to have each and every step done so that I could just sit back and do nothing. Unfortunately, within minutes of waking up, my phone started to send frequent alerts as there is a lot going on with my place of work. Almost immediately, I found my anxiety increasing and my do-nothing all day plan being pushed to the side. Eventually, things calmed down enough that I could take a few deep breaths. Sadly, by that point, my head was pounding and I could barely remember that I needed to blog. I needed a restart. So, after taking a nap to regroup and eating lunch, I’m finally getting back to the day I hoped to have.

One of the many ideas I had for the day was to clean out my personal email inbox that tends to get just as overwhelmed as I do. I will often delete emails I don’t need right away, without thought. Other emails compel me to respond immediately. Then, there are those that I keep with the idea that I would go back and read more carefully. One of this week’s email was from the Duran Duran store. Anyone else get this one? Basically, this email was to advertise new items in the band’s official merchandise store.

ragged-tiger-world-tour-shirts

What did I decide to do now that I have had a chance to really look at this email? I went to the online store, of course! As soon as the page loaded, I remembered that there were other relatively new designs, including these:

Now, my mind is really moving at a mile a minute. How do I feel about merchandise right now? Normally, I am all for it. I admit that I have appreciated all of my various t-shirts lately. Since I have not gone into work for months, I found myself living in more comfortable clothes like t-shirts. But now, things are different. Many people have lost their jobs. Many are struggling to put food on the table. Some are fighting for health or even their lives. Is it wrong or selfish look at the merchandise or to buy?? This leaves me just wanting to scream.

Here’s the deal. Am I lucky that I’m able to buy something(s) if I want to? Yes, absolutely, I am very fortunate. I wish that everyone could. Does it make me a terrible person to want to have something like a fun package to look forward to? I don’t think so. Heck, even if people don’t want to buy any of this new merchandise, I still like that it is there. I like to see that band is doing something and staying active, in some way, shape or form. I especially like these designs. On one hand, Seven and the Ragged Tiger imagery and design is one of my absolute favorites. I appreciate the more modern group photo and latest font. They are all awesome, I think.

All that said, you know what I would really want as far as merchandise goes these days? I like that DDHQ has been releasing word searches, which are fun and distracting. What about a big jigsaw puzzle? I have been doing puzzles since the pandemic started and really enjoying them. I suspect that I might like one even more, if it featured something Duran related. Just a thought.

So what about the rest of you? Do you like this new merchandise? Are you planning on buying? Do you have suggestions for other items? If so, what?

Guest Blog: An Ode to the Band Shirt

Several fans have begun to decrease their Duran memorabilia collections. I am the fan that lurks on resale websites hoping to snare a vintage item. As I search, it fascinates me to see what people collect. Some people collected buttons. Some fans saved complete sets of the trading cards and the puffy stickers. Many fans still covet vinyl. I collect band t-shirts. Today, as I began my morning routine of daily outfit selection, my eyes stumbled across my large Duran shirt collection. Words began to swirl in my mind about why I adore buying
Duran Duran shirts. “You should blog about this,” my Sprit whispered. So here we go!

Band Image

The vast majority of my shirts feature an image of the band. I always buy one of these shirts at concerts. I think prefer these shirts because they represent the first shirts I bought as a girl. It may have grown into a persistent habit over time. I was that fan who adorned my section of my shared bedroom with multiple Duran posters. These shirts stimulate the visual side of my brain. However, as an amply endowed Black woman, when I wear these shirts publicly now, I do attract a lot of attention. “Just doing personal band promotion”, I tell myself as observers stare. The best designs have a full sized band image. The shirts with a smaller Duran image near the neckline don’t flatter all body shapes. I tend to wear band photo shirts in my private moments. Roger via a shirt is no stranger to my nightcapped-self brushing my teeth. I sport John shirts when I feel beautiful. The band via a shirt has accompanied me begrudgingly tending in my simple garden. This is my favorite shirt to purchase.

Band Logo/Album Art

I also enjoy the shirts that feature band logos or homages to a specific album. I’ve seen some fantastic album art choices within the band’s official webstore. The brown matador shirt from My Own Way vinyl, the Reflex abstract symbol shirt, and the funny shaped Notorious figure shirt are on my bucket list (see the Vintage & Archived sections of the band’s webstore). I often buy album art shirts at concerts because they serve as a memento. When I wear them, I’m reminded of my favorite album songs or concerts I choose to attend. The band has issued some logo shirts as part of their VIP packages. I prefer to wear all of these logo/art shirts
publicly. These shirts have tremendous versatility. I can wear them in casual and business casual settings. They are great conversation pieces. I’ve also have some fun, spontaneous conversations with strangers who recognize the band’s logo. Once, strangers frowned at a young cashier and I who were chatting about my band shirt in a long grocery store line. Sorry, Not Sorry!

Color Palette

White, black and red seem to be the dominant color schemes of Duran shirts. I have no green or purple shirts. I have one pink shirt with the traditional British lion Double D logo; I regret that I didn’t buy the mint green version as well. There are a couple of blue shirts circa the reunion/Astronaut era. The red shirts are far fewer than their black and white apparel contemporaries. My least favorite band shirt is a red one. It is a red, Red Carpet Massacre shirt featuring the band. The red and black tones muddy the band’s image. Since then, my rule is “Be Resolute, Life is too short for shirts that aren’t Cute.” At first glance, the plethora of black or white shirts seem redundant but I’ve changed mind on this issue. The band made their most colorful, white shirts during the Wedding album era. These shirts mirror the bright colors of the Ellen von Unwerth/Nick Egan era. Black and white are blank canvases so the band can add any details at their discretion. Now, I’m at peace with the plain
background color options that comprise the bulk of my shirt collection.

Material, Cut & Size

I tend to purchase the men’s fit or traditional shirts. They just have more room. If a shirt is too boxy/square, then I add a belt or tuck them into my pants. I have purchased some girl’s cut shirts. These shirts are cut to flatter a curvy shape. For some reason, I find that the ladies fit shirts are made of a more sheer material. So I tend to accessorize more with a jacket, long necklace or whatever to accommodate the thinner material. I didn’t purchase some of the Paper Gods shirts with the individual icons (lips, rocket, phone) due to the thin material. I highly recommend holding up shirts to yourself when buying at concert kiosks. The wrong size can be devastating! I have a few shirts that I have outgrown due to my age or gasp my robust eating habits. I have a few shirts that are too large for me; these shirts make great travel pajamas. Someday, I hope to take the
small/big shirts and get a quilt made of them. That’s a thing, right?

Musings

Yes, I have a “wish” list of vintage Duran Duran shirts. I would love to have a complete set of the individual band members from the Scavullo photo sessions. I therefore scooped up all of the individual band member
shirts circa the All You Need Is Now cycle. I need to replace some white band shirts due poor laundry habits (too yellow now) or due to sigh barbeque sauce/red fruit juice and white band shirt encounters. Yes, I wash my band shirts separately with whitening detergent on the delicate cycle now. I’m continually searching for larger replicas of the shirts I had as a girl. Alas, I wore my shirts until they were threadbare. I don’t have any of them anymore. I didn’t anticipate my fan longevity and save them for posterity. Yes, I peruse the band’s official webstore. My latest acquisitions are the white 2020 band image shirt and the white 2020 hat. I’m sure you are unsurprised with my choices given this blog. With all the current world events, a girl can still online shop!

I will end this blog with my pet peeve. I DETEST badly designed, bootleg merchandise. If you want a laugh, check out the popular auction websites. There are many hideous options. After all, laughter is good for the soul.

Harmoniously,
Nat

Guest Blog: Talk About…POP, POP, POP Figures

By Nat Mingo

November has been eventful already. The Midwest has plunged into its January temperatures and I am wearing my winter jacket a lot. I’ve got several work related projects to complete. I was really looking forward to the annual DD calendar launch, which frequently occurs at the end of November as well. Therefore, I was elated to hear an “official” announcement that the Funko POP Company is releasing a Duran Duran set. It’s two of my favorite things being combined into an awesome, new creation like Ben & Jerry’s
cookie dough ice cream or Starbucks holiday egg nog latte. Who doesn’t love a good mashup?

Some of you may be thinking, “What’s the big deal with these Funko POP figurines?” Please let me explain. My brother-in-law (BIL) introduced me to these toys. He has been collecting the POP figures for years. He even gifted his groomsmen with them. Now when I visit my sister and BIL, I have the opportunity to spend time with his massive collection. Part of the appeal is that the Funko Company has now obtained the licensing rights for many POP culture entities. I highly recommend watching the first half of the documentary, “Making Fun-the Story of Funko” to view the company’s origins. There are sport Funko POPs, movie Funko POPs, music Funko POPs, television Funko POPs. I recently saw that they have a new historical American moments Funko POPs (oh, be still, my history- loving heart). Thanks to BIL, I regularly traverse the toy aisles to view the latest figures. I spent a year, amassing the full Marvel Avengers figurines and several Star Wars “The Empire Strikes Back” and “Return of the Jedi” figures. I had the Avenger POPs in my classroom for a spell which delighted my students. But alas, the kids and I were distracted by these items and I brought them home. I have since vowedto limit my POP purchases to special purchases. The upcoming Duran Duran figures certainly qualify.

I’m excited about the Duran POPs because they are well designed. The Funko POP figurines have a distinctive style. Unfortunately, some figures look a little generic. The face doesn’t closely resemble the person so the clothing has to compensate. The facial shape is part of the product’s allure; you know a Funko POP when you
see one. When you examine the Duran figures, I LOVE that each band member is distinct. The hairstyles are the best I’ve seen on a Funko figure. You can almost imagine running your fingers through the hair of the John, Nick and Simon figures. The clothing choices are impeccable because they are so detailed. In real life, most of the band members are dark haired and dark eyed so a poorly designed POP would make the figures identical. This didn’t happen. Also, the poses are substantial. I have bought some female POP characters which had very narrow feet. The figures don’t stand up well. The Duran POPs look like they will be “standable”.

As mentioned earlier, part of the Funko POP’s appeal is nostalgia. The Duran set captured the early days of the band. This was a wise choice. The era of the band’s history does include Andy; I appreciate being able to purchase his POP toy. Andy played an important role in the band’s early career. When I saw the Duran figures, I immediately starting thinking about my Duran Duran artifacts from that period. Hopefully, if this set sells well, there is the potential for future Duran sets. My BIL bought my sister several versions of Michael Jackson
and Prince POPs. I would purchase a “Reflex” or “Save A Prayer” set of figures, a “Notorious” or “All You Need Is Now” set of figures or set based on the Scavullo posters from the Sing Blue Silver period. The possibilities are numerous.

I hope I’ve explained the Funko POP phenomenon appropriately. I suspect the Duran set will make it onto several people’s holiday wish lists. The Funko POPs are limited editions; they make so many figures now that once they are sold, they are gone. EBay is full of inflated, “retired” POPs. So let’s RUN and purchase the Duran Duran figures. They are scheduled to be released on December 15th . I’m already plotting where I will place these valuable items and perhaps I will blog on this topic again…

Gratefully,
Nat

Guest Blog: The Awesome NASA T-Shirts

We love when friends send us guest blogs out of the blue! While obviously we love having this place to share all of our Duranie thoughts and ideas, we also welcome other Duranies to do the same! Here’s one from our friend, Nat, about the cool merch connected to Tuesday’s special show! -A&R

I try to attend as many Duran concerts as possible. Like many others, I was unable to attend the NASA show this week. I’m grateful for social media because so many generous people shared their videos and images of this special event. In the “old days”, I would’ve parked myself in front of the television, waiting for MTV to air a blurb and pressing “record” on the family VCR. So while I was not physically present for this concert, I got to see many of its highlights. The
band obviously enjoyed the experience as their social media accounts (Facebook, Twitter & Instagram) shared several “behind the scenes” photos. The band, their family members and friends widely grinned in these photos. I confess that one of my favorite social media posts was of the merchandise table. As a band t-shirt junkie, I was thrilled to see the NASA themed merchandise and I’m incredibly excited that we can purchase some items online through the band’s website.

I usually buy a shirt at Duran concerts for a few reasons. I get my item faster at shows. In February, I made a rookie mistake in Vegas. I’ve been lusting after the white, lightweight hoodie with the tiger on the front for a while. I spied it at the 1st of the Vegas shows but was put off by the long merchandise line. “I will get it tomorrow” I thought. Unfortunately, the next night was the last concert of the touring leg and my shirt was sold out! I haven’t bought it yet
online. So, I regret this oversight still. After I buy Duran items from the official webstore, I begin my long wait for it to arrive to the States. I feel very much like Cookie Monster did in his Siri commercial waiting for his cookies to bake; Google this commercial for a serious belly laugh. I did buy two NASA shirts this week so my sojourn has begun again. I’m consoled by the fan community discount that was useful for this purchase.

Concert shirts are great commemorative items. I’ve purchased multiple VIP tickets for the same touring cycle. Nowadays, the VIP ticket includes some related merchandise. Some VIP items
have been handy. I use the steel, travel mug on days when I need a morning smile. I sport the new headphones on my social media avatars because they are fierce! Others VIP items have
stored away for posterity (yes-the laminates). But the t-shirts, I always use; I’m wearing the black, red & silver 2011 VIP shirt as I type this blog. I bought the Madison Square Garden shirt
after the concert in true New York fashion. I look forward to wearing these NASA shirts to remind me of this special event.

Duran Duran has always been concerned about the visual details. When you look at the NASA concert footage, the video monitor images, behind the band, are evidence of this tendency. Whomever is designing these background images deserves a pay raise. These visuals have become much stronger and enhance the band’s songs. The NASA shirts are well designed like these visuals. Of course, the hugely talented yet humble Patty Palazzo designed them. I feel like I will own “designer” shirts that I obtained at a reasonable price. The front of the shirts have some classic astronaut images and she placed the band’s name on the back of the shirt, using the
NASA font. This detail adds a “peek-a-boo” element that I like. From the front, it looks like a cool, regular shirt but when you turn around, the viewer realizes that this shirt is a limited edition. (If you haven’t seen the video talking about how the shirts are interactive, check it out here.) I’m already accessorizing these shirts in my head; I’m thinking joggers, kicks, baseball cap and big hoop earrings for a great summertime look.

I’m not desolate (anymore) about my non-attendance at this concert. More images and videos from this show are still being posted. Relevant interviews accompanied this show and it sounds
like new music and concerts are in our future. In the meantime, I will enjoy wearing my newNASA shirts…when they arrive…by mail…from the UK. Are they here yet?

Gold Package Review 2019

Anyone else get a nice little package this week from DuranDuranHQ? Yes, the new gold package from DuranDuranMusic, the official fan community, arrived this week. If you have no idea what I am talking about, let me explain. The official fan community is open to fans who are willing to pay a membership fee. There are two levels of membership: silver and gold. Silver gives members access to the website including exclusive content, a message board, contests and access to presales. The gold membership comes with all of that and extra merchandise. Every so often that merchandise package gets updated and recently that was the case. Like others, I went ahead and renewed at that level to get the stuff. I’m a sucker when it comes to Duran merch. So what do I think about what came?

T-Shirt

This t-shirt is black with both Duran Duran and part of the chorus from the song, Rio, in white. The writing is such that it creates a box shape as seen in the picture here.

To be honest, I wasn’t sure what I thought of the t-shirt design. I like the black and white but not sure about the shape. Would the name Duran Duran be seen or overwhelmed by the lyrics? I honestly think it looks better in person than in the picture. Plus, I appreciate the soft quality of the t-shirt material. I’ll be interested to see how people react to it when I wear it.

Post-it Notes

I love post-it notes. I use them all the time both at home and at work. In this case, the notes are a good size. They are smaller than the standard but a little bigger than the usual small size. They are white with the red Duran Duran. I like them.

Speaker

The speaker included in the package is a water resistant one (pool side). I have to chuckle at that. I wonder how many of us have no access to pools. I guess I could bring it to a hotel but I don’t see that as a common happening. That said, I know that I could use this speaker in my house. There is a space in which a string could be attached for easy carrying but that is not included. What is included is the charging cable and an audio cable. I have not tried it out yet, but I look forward to it. It will fit nicely in my office and the rumor is that I’ll be doing some writing in there this summer.

Sticker

I like stickers. This is a basic white with black font. I’m not sure where I want it, so for now, it will hang out on my fridge. Where are the rest of you putting yours?

Portable Phone Charger

I feel like we have received a Duran phone charger in the past. Am I imagining it? Gone crazy? Don’t answer that last question. In this case, it is square and pretty compact. I think it is a great idea as there are frequently times when I need a charge when I am out and about. Now, if I can only remember to use it…

Popsocket

Full confession here. For the longest time, I didn’t even know what these were or what their purpose was. I get it now after watching all of my high school students use them as they attempt to watch whatever on their phones whenever they can. This makes me feel old because I would not be interested in watching something on a small screen unless I had to. The one included in the package is basic black with a white font. Right now, I doubt that I will use it as I have a really nice JoSi picture as my phone case. But I am sure that I will when I get a new phone and case.

Tea Towel

The tea towel is a natural color with a red box that lists all the songs released on albums. This is the one item I have seen the most discussion on as people are not certain what to really do with it. I have to agree. It is a rather large towel but the Duran part is less than 25%. The only thing I can figure is to fold it and frame it. My friend, Suzie, is planning on making a little dress out of it for her vodka bottles, which is a fun idea! What are the rest of you doing with it?

4 Lyric Posters

These posters are 11 by 17 in size. They feature lyrics for Rio, Do You Believe in Shame, Ordinary World and The Seventh Stranger. I do like that these posters are different colors and are on thick glossy paper. I would love to display them in some way. I just have to figure out where!

Overall, I like the package. There are some items that I will immediately use and appreciate. Some others are great that I will need to remember to use. (Anyone want the job of reminding me? Anyone? Anyone?) A couple of others will need me to be creative but that isn’t a bad thing. What do the rest of you think? Was it worth it?

Power to Change the Point of View: New Gold Package

It has been a rough week. Rhonda mentioned in yesterday’s blog that there is a lot of people in pain. That is true in my world as well. In fact, it has been one of the toughest weeks of teaching in my entire career as a lot of kids and staff are in pain. I won’t go into details but it has gotten to me, too. I worry about people I care about being in pain, including friends and students. Yet, I’m determined to “change the point of view” with this blog. I know that I need a break from reality and figured that you all might, too. So, I’m going to focus on something far more positive.

I don’t know about the rest of you but I get a lot of email. This isn’t because I’m super popular but because I get a lot of junk. I swear I spend a lot of time just deleting all those junk emails, which is what I was doing when earlier this week I came upon one that I saved to read later. What email was this? It had this as its subject line: Duran Duran New date and new GOLD package!

While I saved this email to read after school, I didn’t think too much of it as I figured it would be about that Iceland date that I knew that I wouldn’t be going to. Somehow I had missed the part about the gold package, thinking that it was connected to tickets for that show. Alas, I was wrong! Here is what it said:

Finally, we will be releasing the new GOLD package on www.duranduranmusic.com on April 30th. We are very excited about this package as these items will not be available in the online store or at shows. The package (see photo) includes:

Brand new exclusive Duran Duran RIO logo’d lyric t-shirt
• Duran Duran logo’d water resistant Bluetooth speaker
• The brand new Duran Duran logo’d sticky note pad
• Duran Duran logo’d portable phone charger. At a show and battery dying? Just plug into this handy device.
• Custom designed Duran lyric poster set – Four (4) high quality matted 11″ X 17” posters shipped in protected tube
• Duran Duran “popsocket” – the perfect accessory for your cell phone
• Duran Duran circular sticker – looks great on a car bumper, notebook or anywhere
• A natural logo’d “Tea Towel” with the new logo featuring all songs commercially released on Duran Duran albums

If you are not already a member the 30th would be a great time to sign up for the DD VIP Fan Community . Existing members who would like the GOLD package should RENEW at the GOLD level beginning the 30th and you will receive all of the new GOLD merchandise and we will add 12 months of membership beyond your current expiration date. For example if you expire on June 1st, 2019 and you renew on April 30th your membership will be extended to June 1st, 2020. All of the details and pricing will be up on the site on April 30th.

A picture of the new merch was included as seen here:

New Gold Package

So, what do you all think? I admit it. I’m a sucker for Duran merch. I always have and always will be. It is interesting to see the focus on lyrics in both the t-shirt and posters. I wonder how they decided on those songs of Rio, Ordinary World, Do You Believe in Shame and The Chauffeur. I don’t know if I would have chosen those but I don’t mind them. Beyond the lyrics, there are some repeats in terms of types of products, including the post-it notes and portable charger. I always love post-its so those will be welcome. I like the cell phone pop-up but I have a really nice Duran cell phone case with a JoSi picture so I don’t know that I would use that but might with a future phone. The tea towel is like the canvass bags we got in the VIP package for those February dates. I had planned to frame one of those but this would be a lot easier to frame! I am unsure about what to do think about the car sticker as it depends on the size but I do like the speaker.

Now, I have no idea how much this new gold package will be. Right now, though, I’m tempted to buy it. I could use a pick me up. What about the rest of you? What are your thoughts about this new package?

Guest Blog: The Gift of the Duran Duran Calendar

I feel like Christmas has come a little early here at the Daily Duranie.  First, we find out that the band is back in the studio.  Then, we received another fabulous guest blogs by one of our favorite people, Nat!  She reminds us all of enjoying and appreciating the little things, even in fandom.  It is a good read.  Enjoy!  -A&R

The holiday season is upon us! I just celebrated Thanksgiving with my family and decorated my home for Christmas. My merry tree is decorated. I’m obsessing over the scent of pine and the taste of egg nog. The shopping frenzy of Black Thursday-Friday is over. While I am loving the twinkly lights and the hopefulness of this season, it can be a difficult time to navigate for me. Gift exchanges are popular now. Years ago, I read Gary Chapman’s “The Five Love Languages” and realized that receiving gifts is important to me. So, how do I express love to others using a physical item? My toddler niece is too young to have a list of desired items yet. So, do I purchase needed items like leggings or something impractical like a Disney Princess something? What to get my mom who has everything she wants or needs? Fortunately, one gift I do not need to think about is my annual gift to myself-the Duran Duran calendar.

Every year, around mid-late November, I look forward to DDHQ’s announcement that a calendar will be issued. Yes, folks, there is a 2019 edition available now on the band’s website. As I bought mine, I pondered my annual tradition. Why is this item important to me? I know I value the calendar because I don’t entrust my family to buy it for me. Timeliness is not their forte and I want my calendar in my hands by January first. It’s just a calendar in a world of calendars so what makes the Duran Duran one special?

It’s a work of art. I bought my first Duran Duran calendar in 1984. It reflects that Seven and the Ragged Tiger vibe. Just gazing at its cover brings forth memories of random “Sing Blue Silver” lines. Every year, the calendar has distinct visual elements. Some years, the band elects to use concert photographs. Other times, the band members are carefully posed. One of my favorite calendar photos is of John in a light colored suit, walking down a street. It’s a stunning photograph that could hang on a gallery wall.

It’s a time capsule. Sometimes, the calendar’s visual style mirrors the most recent record that the band recorded. This makes the calendar feel like an extension of the record. As mentioned above, when concert photographs are used, the calendar serves as a tour memento. The monthly photo selection reflects the band member’s birthdays. Simon is always featured in October, just as April belongs to Roger. I look forward to seeing who won June? Is there a pattern? Say, does Nick gets June in 2004 so John gets June in 2005? Does the “loser” automatically get the month of July? Hmmmmm…

It’s a practical tool. Okay, I’ve just spent two paragraphs lavishing about a CALENDAR! At first, I would never write on my calendar. During an “It’s time to lose some weight, Nat” period, I would record my exercise minutes on the DD calendar. The calendar layouts change each year.

Some years are more conducive to recording important events. I’ve struggled with a few layouts because they were so impractical. Yet, even the impracticalness, made that year’s calendar unique. I look forward to the first day of each month to see what the next month will bring. I don’t peek-LOL. It’s amusing when I use the calendar when booking appointments. “Excuse me, Roger, I’m talking to my dentist. Yes, I’m available on 3rd at 5:00 p.m.” I love it when the band uses some European elements and/or words. They are being inclusive to the fan base. Plus, I get to dust off my high school French.

It’s become a tradition (for me). There have been a few years when the band didn’t produce an official calendar. In response, I did what fans do- I pouted for a few seconds! Some awesome graphic designers shared fan-created calendars with me. It’s not the same. It’s flimsy when compared to the heft of an official calendar. When purchasing the annual calendar, at times, I buy another DD item. Other times, just a calendar purchase is enough. Just like a child on Christmas morning, I look forward to this special piece of mail from the U.K. The annual Duran Duran calendar is a gift to me, from me. I will keep buying if they keep producing. Deal!

Enjoy your time with loved ones and don’t forget to treat yourself,

The Next Thing You Must Have–Duran Shopping

‘Tis the season.  I woke up this morning to lots of beautiful, peaceful, white snow on the ground.  It reminded me that the holiday season is just around the corner.  This means vacation, family time, good food, and more.  This year, the holiday season (no matter your holiday of choice) feels like a good time to appreciate what you have and embrace your loved ones.  For me, this embrace will still include gift giving.  Why?  I like to give gifts and like to make my family and friends happy.  Perhaps, you feel the same or, maybe, your family and friends are trying to figure out some items that they might buy you, the Duranie in their lives!  Here are some suggestions!!

Duran Duran Official Store

During this time of year, I always recommend checking out what is available in the official Duran Duran store.  Usually, there are some new goodies as well as some classics to buy.  Here are the items that have caught my attention!

Holiday Bauble Set

These are due out on Monday!!  I love that they are hand decorated glass and come in a wooden display box.  Super cute!!!

Paper Gods Products

Band Paper Gods T-shirt

Rhinestone T-shirt
Paper Gods Rhinestone T-shirt

Both of these t-shirts were available on tour and super cute in person.  The rhinestone one, in particular, is very cute!  The things I really like about the current t-shirts is that they fit really well and are super soft!!!!

Of course, there are more Paper Gods products in the store!  I know that the coffee mugs caught my attention, including the one below:

Mug

Classics in the Store:

Airline bag
Airline bag

Planet Earth shirt

I also love, love, love that there are items with various logos representing various Duran Duran eras.

Beach Towel

Shopping Elsewhere

Even if these products don’t suit your fancy, there is plenty more Duran Duran related items to buy this year.  One item that I might recommend is:

Paper Gods Vinyl

Vinyl

I know it is available at Amazon and I just read that it is available at Barnes and Noble in the US as well!  To me, vinyl really makes me appreciate the music more and this one is no exception!  Speaking of this musical format, Amazon also has Notorious and Big Thing available on vinyl, too!!

Unstaged on DVD

Unstaged front

My copy of this just arrived!  Be on the look out for a review of it soon!!!

Cover Albums

Perhaps, your interest in Duran Duran covers has been renewed or ignited after hearing and buying your copy of Eagles of Death Metal’s version of Save a Prayer.  If so, here are some cover albums that you might want to check out!

Making Patterns Rhyme cover

Electroclash Undone: An Electro Tribute To Duran Duran

Electrotrash Undone: An Electro Tribute To Duran Duran

Books

Perhaps, you are interested in adding some books to your library that have a Duran connection.  For recommendations, please check out some of the ones we like right on our homepage.  🙂

What else am I missing?  Ah…yes.  Maybe, some might opt to give money for touring.  After all, concerts aren’t free!  Perhaps, you all need a reminder of how good Duran Duran is.  If so, I recommend watching this brand new clip of their performance on the Graham Norton show:

On that note, happy shopping for the Duranie(s) in you/your life!

DDM Gold Membership Merchandise Wrap Up

Last week I received an email letting me know that my Duran Duran Music Gold membership merchandise package had been shipped. I was surprised because I’d completely forgotten about it!  I vaguely remembered reading that it would take about 6 weeks (after renewing) to receive the merchandise, and to be honest I couldn’t even remember when I’d actually renewed, but I was excited to read that it was on its way.

The package made it to my house yesterday, and it felt a little like Christmas as I opened the long, rectangular package addressed to me. I didn’t realize that this was coming from DDM until I opened the box and pulled out the first item: an umbrella!

sorry about my beautiful place mat in the background

Admittedly, the umbrella is what sold me on the upgrade to gold membership on DDM. If I think of the amount of times I have said that I needed to bring an umbrella to a DD concert for possible use during White Lines…well, when I saw the gold package included an umbrella, we’ll just say it spoke to me. This umbrella does not disappoint and is not your ordinary drugstore umbrella.  No…this thing is HUGE, measuring about 4 feet across when open (from spine to spine across the middle) It is a push-button automatic open (pull down to release and pack away), and feels very heavy-duty compared to the cheap umbrellas I buy for our California sprinkles over the years.  Two people could easily fit underneath, and if our predicted “El Niño” weather pattern holds true for California this year, I am sure it will get a lot of use!

Yes, those are my cat's paws in the background there. She is incredibly strong-willed and not very well-behaved...and very big.

After pulling out the umbrella and realizing what this package was, I excitedly pulled the rest of the merchandise out of the box: a t-shirt, a keychain in a black pouch, a power bank, a pen, a pad of post-its, and a lyric sheet.

The t-shirt came to me with the correct size, and when I tried it on, it was very roomy. The silver foil looks great, and I’m very happy with it. I’m pretty sure this is a unisex sized t-shirt, and while I’ve heard of people getting the wrong size, I am happy to say that mine worked out just fine.

The keychain (pictured without the pouch) has a nice quality silver-finish, and doubles as a bottle opener (they know their fans and I love the utilitarian value here). The interlocking D’s are engraved on it, and it’s already doing it’s duty on my keychain.

my apologies for the blur here...my phone didn't like taking a picture of this one.

I can hardly wait to be out and about and use my power bank – especially while on tour with Amanda. Seriously, I’m always out of power with at least ONE of my electronics…so this is handy! I like that the end lights up blue and indicates when it needs charged….and truly, it takes very little to entertain me!!

The pen is a really fancy ball point pen that I haven’t tried using yet…this will be hidden deep in my closet so that my family doesn’t steal this pen like they have my others…

The post-its were probably the least exciting item in my gold package. This is not because I don’t want DD post-its, but because I will be afraid to use them for fear of the day when I run out! I’m the same way about the DD wrapping paper and other “consumable” items that the webstore sells…which probably says way more about me than anyone cares to know…

these are about 2 x 3 inches...about the same size as a typical post it. They're great unless you're like me and afraid of using them all...

The lyric sheet was the one real “miss” in the entire package. You see, when I pulled out all of the merchandise and went through it, I realized that I didn’t have the lyric sheet. So, I looked in the box to see if I missed it. Didn’t see it right away, so then I felt around and sure enough – I found it.  The lyrics are copied onto standard thickness stationary that has a beige stippled look to it.  Kind of reminds me of the kind of paper one would use for a treasure map, so it sort of has that “old” look to it.  Nicer than putting it on a standard piece of copy paper, not quite as nice as having it on cardstock. The problem is that due to the way it was packed along the inside of the rectangle box (to fit the umbrella) and now has fold marks. I didn’t really know what I would do with this, but framing it is kind of out of the question now (probably??) since the paper is now wrinkled…but I don’t think I would have framed it anyway because that’s not really my thing. That said, I know my fellow fans. Someone out there probably would want to frame it, and this is likely going to piss that someone off.  I don’t know what DDM could have done to ship this so that it wouldn’t be folded and wrinkled, except to maybe do the merchandise in two shipments, one for the umbrella and hard sided items and another for these lyrics so they could be shipped flat. Yes, that would cost more, but I think that at least having that option available for fans (to pay for better shipping), might solve the problem. As it is now, I don’t really know what I’m going to do with these lyrics…not that I really knew what to do with them before. It’s one of those things that is nice to have since Simon wrote them (and completely mislabeled the second verse as v1, which makes me laugh because you know that he dashed these off super quick!), and now I get to figure out how best to save them.

lyrics
not sure if this really shows the wrinkles as well as it does in normal light…just don’t say I didn’t warn you if you’re still waiting for your merchandise!

All in all, I’m extremely pleased with the merchandise! No, it wasn’t all that important to have, but they’re nice “extras” and I don’t treat myself to DD merchandise all that often (as in maybe once every couple of years!!). Thumbs up from me!
