Guest Blog: Side Pieces

By Nat Mingo

On Halloween, Nick released his latest photography book.  It’s his second photographic endeavor (to my knowledge).  His first book was “Interference”.  I don’t own it nor have I ever seen it.  It pops up on resale websites periodically. I do remember the ripples of excitement that “Interference” caused upon its original release. Fan reactions to Nick’s newest book have ranged from pure delight to ambivalence.

This book release reminds me of the importance of side projects and Duran Duran. I gravitate towards their musical undertakings. Arcadia and the Power Station are their most popular side projects; I continue to listen to both groups. Simon has released some independent work such as “Grey Lady of the Sea”.  I thoroughly enjoy that track.

My favorite Duran related side bars are soundtrack music.

Some favorites:

“I Do What I Do” from the 9 ½ weeks film.

I remember waiting at friend’s house for the video’s first viewing.  The black and white video looked so modern at the time. I’m still so fond of this song that I won’t exit my vehicle until it ends.

“Say the Word” from the Playing for Keeps soundtrack

It has the lush NR synth sounds that I adore. The chorus has the classic Le Bon “hold the note” moment. I can’t remember the movie at all. Yikes!

“Out of My Mind” from the Saint soundtrack

This track reminds me of the Warren-Meddazzaland era and the nineties.  The sitar/guitar hook is mesmerizing. It reminds me of Billy Corgan/ Smashing Pumpkins type music. The gothic video is worth a view. I saw many a Val Kilmer film; this film was a generic spy thriller.

“Take It Easy” from the American Anthem soundtrack

This is my cheesy throwback song. I appreciate Andy’s voice and that it represents the mid-80’s vibe. It was all about the 1984 Olympics and the subsequent McDonald’s endorsement. I smile and whip my hair around a bit when this tune comes on the stereo.

Duran members have ventured into literary circles as Andy and John have written autobiographies. Simon is a wordsmith so I envision him releasing a poetry book one day.  Nick and John are working on a musical. Roger continues to DJ to enthusiastic audiences. John has been dabbling with painting again. I could see myself going to see exhibition of his work. While we await new music, fans can meander through the side project catalog.

By Daily Duranie

Once upon a time, there were two Duran Duran fans. One named Amanda, the other named Rhonda. Over many vodka tonics, they would laugh about the idea of one day writing a book about their fan experiences. While that manuscript is still being composed...Rhonda thought they should write a blog. (What was she THINKING?!) Lo and behold: The Daily Duranie was born.
